I'd still say they don't care about YOU. They do at least care that society functions, and understand that the better it functions and the better off its citizens are, the less crime and corruption "needs" to happen...
Though they quite directly cannot care about everyone individually. It is both physically impossible and counterproductive to effectively play favorites with those they know, or those that make pleas to them.

True, politicians are not like Santa Claus who magically know everyone by name, but maybe they are aware of people in your set of circumstances and can sympathize.
On the other side of the coin, many politicians run town halls and other events where you can meet them in person. How many of you nihilists here have ever bothered to show up to one or those, let alone vote consistently?
