Wait... Poland wants the Nazis now? Do they realize what they're asking for?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

poland is still far-right politically, they just dont like russians.

[–] IanM42@piefed.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can’t say I blame them. Russia was pretty shitty to them on their way to Berlin. And still shitty until Poland escaped the Iron Curtain.

And still being shitty.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

im surprised they havnt completely "hypnotized by russia" since most far right govts aligned with russia over the years.

[–] detren@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Some on the far right have done so but most people learn the history of the last couple times Poland aligned with Russia and how it always ends with losing the country

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 42 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

They're asking for something that will force US involvement in a war if Russia were to invade.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

There is zero evidence that the US would intervene if Russia invaded anyone, in fact we have evidence that the US wouldn't do shit about it other than sell weapons to make money from it. The US has been doing that exact thing with Ukraine, which Russia invaded. Expecting a different outcome in a nearly identical situation is one of the stupidest ideas.

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Just look at the Arabian Gulf countries... They built US bases in the promise of protection, and when they were attacked as a result of the US starting a war, they were left to defend themselves AND defend the US bases while the American soldiers escaped to hotels.

You'd be a complete moron to request a US base after what we all just witnessed.

[–] orclev@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Will it though? I could easily see Trump just writing off the deaths of any service members as a favor to his best buddy Putin or even ordering them to help Russia with the invasion. Best case scenario he just has the entire base stand down and sit on their asses while Russia does what it wants. He's already indicated he doesn't give a single flying fuck about NATO, and it's not like he's ever let little things like laws or treaties stop him before.

Careful, Poland!

1939: Molotov–Ribbentrop

2026: Trump–Putin

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Uuuh, somebody mix a new cocktail for them!

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Vodka and pureed hamburger

No, I mean like the one they mixed for Molotov

[–] Tolc@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

dont know what MR pact was award

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It wasn't specifically intended as the typical anti-communist shot many comments here normally are. More just a general "be careful who you invite in, Poland" as I don't feel cozying up to Trump and the US military is in any country's best interest.

While communism isn't for me, at least not in any way I've seen it play out, I do believe Marx got a lot right about capitalism. I can think M-R wasn't the best deal for Poland while also believing the US and much of the world was wrong for not being better allies to the Soviet Union. Some of us are capable of a little nuance every now and then.

[–] Tolc@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

thanks for clearing that up.

[–] Sauvandu60@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 days ago

Jeffrey Sachs said that If you host U.S. military bases, you are not a sovereign country.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (2 children)

...so that Russia can begin their assault from within?

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

finland should remind poland what happens when you give russians an inch, they took part of thier territory.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

I'm not sure Trump has reached this far out. Hegseth is too drunk to play checkers, let alone chess.

“We will do everything we can to increase the presence of American troops and create the best possible conditions for our American partner,” he added. “The American side expects details and commitment…and we are currently working on this.”

At present, Poland hosts around 10,000 US troops (though the precise number varies depending on rotational deployments), and Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Poland currently spends around $15,000 a year for each one. But “this is not a cost, it is an investment”, he emphasised.

Wonder how that will work out for Poland?

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 8 points 3 days ago

And how it works for Greenland when Orange throws a tantrum and sends those troops to occupy it.

[–] Bogus007@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Poland has been and is still the largest beneficiary of EU funds. I assume that some part of the EU money is used to pay the US. If this is indeed the case, it is betrayal at best, because the EU wants clearly to distance itself from the US.

[–] harcesz@szmer.info 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Its a shame we spend money on that, it tracks with Polands servitude in stuff like CIA torture sites. The logic here is simple tho. If you check Polish treaties before WW2, and their lack of effect while 6 million (~17%) Poles were murdered with near compleat destruction of the country followed by 60 years of de facto occupation there are strong incentives here to sign deals with any devil, if it rises the chances of that not being repeated. Most people didn't want to believe WW2 would start, no one anticipated how brutal it would be. We see what's going over the border and get regular threats of nuclear bombs being dropped on us. Having as many other nations involved as directly as possible is one of the better deterrents and chances for support when shit hits the fan.

They can have the ones in Australia; we don't want 'em.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

you guys replacing them with Chinese ones?

[–] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Given the way the US is under Trump, the Chinese would be preferable.

But if you're one of these people who think the Chinese are gonna invade Australia at any moment (and - by extension - only the US can prevent this), stop drinking the kool-aid.

China's our biggest trading partner. We have a good thing, they have a good thing.

The danger of a Chinese invasion of Australia is propaganda that major arms manufacturers/dealers (both in Australia, and in 'our saviour', the US) grow obscenely rich from.

"Ooh, we have to be ready! The Chinese are likely to invade!"

Yeah, and Iran's been 2 years away from nukes for the last 46 years, the IDF is the 'most moral army in the world', and the US is a shining beacon of freedom and liberty.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world -4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

because everything you said is a joke, I'll respond only with memes.

Oh. You're a fuckwit. I should've known. Pointless talking to you further, then.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago

I'm not the one gurgling on Chinese scrotums trying to sell them as apple pie.

as bad as the US is, we haven't enslaved millions of people based entirely on their culture yet. we haven't been performing mass organ farming on the unrepresented. we haven't instituted a social score that can abandon you from any support structures.

keep suckin', they haven't come yet and good luck with that.

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I really hope we don't. Let EU deal with itself, they have everything figured out.

[–] bitteroldcoot@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

This is stupid on so many levels, it has to be for domestic Polish political consumption.

Trump has left us broke, disarmed and vulnerable. We have nothing left to give. We expended a huge amount of munitions in Iran and are having problems replacing them. Also we had to lower the standards for recruits to make the enlistment quotas. You really don't want us or these new recruits in your country.

You're On Your On dudes.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works -3 points 2 days ago (2 children)

This reads as a very conservative response... Why would we not want to help Poland? If Russia invades them, I'd like Americans present. They are our allies, and our shared enemy is threatening them.

[–] Kazel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

muricans are not our allies anymore
