Hello fellow Garfield fans!

About this community and how I post the comic strip… The comics are posted in chronological order on the day (usually) they were released. Posting them to match the release date adds a bit of fun and nostalgia to match the experience of reading them in the newspaper for first time. Many moons ago, I would ask my Dad to save the newspaper for me everyday so I could read my favorite comic strips. It really sucked when I missed a day. Only years later, when I got the books was I able to catch up on the missed strips.

Garfield is an American comic strip created by Jim Davis. Originally published locally as Jon in 1976, then in nationwide syndication from 1978 as Garfield, it chronicles the life of the title character Garfield the cat, his human owner Jon Arbuckle, and Odie the dog. As of 2013, it was syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals and held the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip... I thought the 3 panels from this era were in black and white? Color was only on Sundays.

If you sort by old, you'll see that they were in color since the start: https://lemmy.world/c/garfield?dataType=Post&sort=Old (edit: THIS IS WRONG, see below)

The pre-syndication "Jon" strips were in black n white tho: https://lemmy.world/post/31362903

They were originally published in black and white. This Wikipedia page mentions they were publishing the books in black and white until 2001. Coloring in the old strips happened later, either for full color compilation books, or it seems like someone did it in the early internet era. Right around the time people switched from newspapers to websites.

Very interesting. Today I Learned. Or rather, Today I Remembered, bc I think I had a bunch of the cartoon book collections that were in black and white.
