Google will soon require you to provide your phone number first, before giving you 15GB.

But they will still bombard you with sponsored emails.

We need to move away from thinking that services that harvest your data and worsen the experience with injected adverts are "free".

That said, many alternatives do have truly free plans. Check out Proton, IKMail or Atomic Mail, to name a few.

When they combined all google services to one drive, including Photos and mail sharing the same 15gb, I decided to drop all google services

Never looked back.

Google feels like a service you can't live without but honestly moving away from it works great for me

The only service that I still keep is Calendar as I need it to sync with my partners google calendar

I haven't really tried to see if things work with an other service

email service is cheap. Just go pay for fastmail. It is easier to degoogle yourself than you think and not that expensive.

I've been burned by spam on my duck.com privacy email that forwards to my personal, after switching its forward address to a bin account (it literally starts with ddgtrashheap) I fully recommend using a duck alias so as to protect your personal address, and have an out if it gets compromised. Now the only emails in my gmail account are from companies I don't trust, like when a retailer uses shopify.

I guess this sub will already be weary of Google services. But everyone should have a burner, prepaid sim card. Companies keep asking for a phone number mandatory, and I keep a junk sim card the way I keep a junk email I throw it away and get a new one every couple of years. I keep it deactivated at all tines in a dual sim phone and only turn it on when I'm expecting a verification message. Highly recommended. Although I know dome countries don't have this available.
