Comic Books

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.

I mean, yikes..?

I first shared that at !comicstripedits@lemmy.world, where we take classic comics and edit them in to ridiculous new shizzle. I really did believe it was someone's edit, at first, but NOPE-- it turned out to be almost impossibly, improbably authentic.

More on the whole affair here, including additional pages:
https://comicvine.gamespot.com/articles/did-batman-really-say-quiet-or-papa-spank/1100-142389/

Bottom line? There's never been a proper explanation, body of behavior (on Batman's part) or even cultural context to explain why he blurted out "quiet, or papa spank!"

So, another mystery for the ages, I suppose...

Yikes indeed, old comics weren't kind to women, it was still a big problem in the 60s.

As for why he said "papa spank", the writer probably thought it sounded tough at the moment. This was the Golden Age, nobody cared back then. After EC got reduced to just publishing the MAD magazine, it took Marvel almost going bankrupt for people passionate about comics working on comics again.

Sorry @jordanlund@lemmy.world,
I maybe should have run this one by you first.

I figured it was a curious, silly, fun bit of comics history for your place to enjoy.
Sorry about that, mate.

No worries, like I say, I get where the other poster was coming from on AI slop, but on zoom you can clearly see the coloring error on the re-master.

There are black lines on both sides of the hand that the modern era colorist mistook for fingers, resulting in:

Ah, how about that?

Why did they alter the image to have more fingers?

I will never understand worthless AI Sloppers.

Doesn't appear to be AI. May still be image manipulation, but if so, it's done by DC.

See page #180 from "The Golden Age Batman Volume 1":

Zooming in on your original and the current reprint, I see what's going on, it's a coloring error on the left and right most "fingers", not an image manipulation.

Lol, I love how he's going after OP for posting "AI slop" when it's literally not even, and hasn't said a word about your proof.

I think it is intended to convey movement, showing bats is rubbing off the makeup.

[–] PlantJam@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm not convinced it's a coloring error. It looks like the pinky finger is duplicated, as evidenced by the two heavier outlines, to indicate motion. Still not AI though.

Edit: I see the coloring error in the comment you were replying to. Whoops.

That's like 14 panels you're quoting.

Where's this 1940 comics mishap happening, exactly?
