I’ve spot checked other new posts too, but am missing two posts here: https://lemmygrad.ml/c/science?dataType=Post&sort=New

A post made from ml has federated to grad in the last hour: https://lemmy.ml/c/science?dataType=Post&sort=New

Try several days lmao compare and contrast my lemmy.ml profile with my lemmygrad.ml profile

For some reason crazypeople.online gets lemmygrad but not vice-versa. Lemdro.id also has its own federation issues so I have no clue what's going on

At this point I'm holding off until I get my own instance with Photon UI set up. I like how it handles tags. Makes it easy to browse articles on a particular date in history with one click across diff accounts/communities (keeping posts sorted into separate RSS feeds)

Grad doesn’t have any subscribers to eternalplaylist, so it won’t federate.

Odd, I could have sworn I subscribed at some point, or maybe I tried and it didn't appear. Is this like the Mastodon/Misskey thing where you have to manually type in the URL to follow/subscribe & discover it? What does it mean if it says Pending forever?

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago

Stuck in pending means it didn’t work. I’d try removing and resub.

I’ve had it fail previously (stuck in pending) for a comm that had a word in the sidebar which was in the other instance’s slur filter, but I don’t see any that I know grad blocks there.

My posts eventually federated (but not the comments on them), but several recent ones from yogthos, including the one screenshotted, still haven’t - doesn’t look like there’s any ban there (it’d be surprising).

One I made ~30 minutes ago hasn’t federated yet either.

https://lemmy.ml/c/science@lemmygrad.ml?dataType=Post&sort=New for my own convenience since it’s looking like I might need to xpost to Hexbear from my account there again instead of continuing to snub them because the admins won’t live up to the higher standards I hold them to.

Sorry, my screenshots don’t actually show that I got to the ml science comm from the grad xpost because I wasn’t paying enough attention to what I was screenshotting where. I should have showed the xpost link or the local science comm viewed from grad. Regardless, it’s still how things look at the moment (no upvote here because I eventually got around to that locally where it will definitely federate and am not trying to double vote on anything):

Hey @nutomic@lemmy.ml, as the admin-who-is-also-a-mod-here-and-a-dev-too, you have been “randomly” selected to be informed that federation sucks and I hate it.

Based on prior experiences elsewhere, I think this is on ml to fix.

I’ll try to pay closer attention if/when (unless you fix/get someone else to fix it first) it happens again, but I think my most recent post might have federated finally when I xposted it from/to Hexbear, because I’m 99% sure I checked right before then and it hadn’t, and all of yogthos’ posts I’ve checked still haven’t federated yet.

In the OP you are looking at two different /c/science communities, namely !science@lemmy.ml and !science@lemmygrad.ml. So the "same" posts you are seeing are just crossposts by the same user. On this site you can see the outgoing federation status (for lemmy.ml in this case). Hexbear is listed under "up to date", and for lemmygrad as well.

Such problems can also happen because of language settings or user blocks. So best view these post listings while logged out or in a private browser window.

Yeah, I did a shit job of documenting this properly and should have taken better screenshots+updated the main post when I realized how useless all the ones I took were, especially before/when pinging, but there was a legit federation issue there for a while and it still existed when I made that comment, but does seem to have resolved since.

Sorry, I’ll do a better job in the future. Thanks for that link, it should be helpful.

No worries. I suppose such temporary federation problems happen occasionally, but you wouldn't notice if you only browse a single instance. Do you know if any of the involved instances was down or unreachable around that time? Then it would be normal that federation gets paused for a time while waiting for the instance to come online.

I was able to xpost via Hexbear throughout, and could then see my posts from/to hexbear to xpost elsewhere. I didn’t check whether federation was working or not from anywhere else.

Both have had some blips recently that I’ve hit, but I was noticing more issues with Hexbear downtime than Lemmygrad.
