I don't like them as a company, but If Discord gives a shit enough to invest in the Linux client to capture more users, Linux is on the right track to grow even more. They don't care about Linux current user base. They want the user base of what it can become.

To late Discord deleted my account and not going back.

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Same. If only there were another Discord-like client that my friends were willing to use. I tried getting them onto Stoat, but I'm starting to lose faith that Stoat can become the next Discord.

Try Cinny or Sable (slightly buggier fork of Cinny with more features.) They're Matrix clients that look close enough to discord.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Or just use fluxer? If you want a discord clone why the fuck are you trying to make a totally different program behave like discord. That defeats the entire purpose of matrix.

Just go use an actual clone.

Moving from discord to fluxer, stoat, etc, is like moving from shitter to bluesky. All centralized platforms will eventually go to shit.

Not of they are self-hostable...? I don't know what the progress is for Fluxer self hosting, but if it comes through like they have 'promised' then I'm excited for it as the next place to go.

I looked into fluxer and it doesn't appear to be federated, meaning you would have to have an "official" fluxer account to interact with the majority of the communities.

[–] noodlesreborn@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Federation and self-hosting are both on the roadmap.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

Or Movim, which is an XMPP client

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Fluxer is sitting RIGHT there looking at you like yer blind.

You forgot how stupid that name sounds, Even if they would be on par feature wise nobody would want to switch to STOAT

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

Revolt was definitely a better name

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

Fluxer seems to be the best candidate alternative. Currently AGPL, with plans to provide self-hosting, federation, and E2EE.

If by "invest" you mean paying one person a few hours weekly to create an Electron app, then there's already plenty of companies doing that. None of which have declared the year of the linux desktop for it. Or maybe all of them, who knows. It's the decade of the year of the linux desktop.

I’m going to delete my discord account soon.. tired of this shit platform

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 21 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I do wish they'd publish a proper apt repo instead of making me install the .deb everytime.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

They FINALLY fixed the update system on arch so you arnt told to install a deb every time update. Its been like 6 years

[–] offspec@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Does it just toggle the setting that was in the json previously?

[–] Crozekiel@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

I started using Vesktop to get away from that specifically... Maybe it's time to try the default again? Well, it's time to find a good alternate and convince everyone I know to switch, but that is a slow process so... lol

[–] simpolomeo@piefed.blahaj.zone 21 points 3 weeks ago

right after they broke all client mods on linux with their new auto updater

[–] Onlykievv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 3 weeks ago

I hate discord but I think at least they'll make more users use Linux

[–] recklessengagement@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Not a fan of discord lately, but I'm definetly in favor of more mainstream Linux support regardless of the source

[–] ghen@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah discord hasn't gone completely to shit but all the signs are there that it's inevitable.

[–] cybernihongo@reddthat.com 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Is every single shitty corporation going to fuck with the Linux garden now? I'm concerned.

[–] sixdripb@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

i would think they would just focus on the flatpak instead of distro specific formats? and, i know there’s an issue with audio sharing apps on pipewire, is that fixed?

but with all the ID crap etc and alternative apps getting pretty good (eying fluxer) maybe i will just jump to another app.

still great to see good discord improvements.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

Fuckin finally.

I checked a few months ago, and having never deleted them, had racked up multiple gigabytes of Discord updates in my downloads directory

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world -1 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, and? Do you expect anyone to head to YT for such an information-free headline?
