What is enshittification?

The phenomenon of online platforms gradually degrading the quality of their services, often by promoting advertisements and sponsored content, in order to increase profits. (Cory Doctorow, 2022, extracted from Wikitionary) source

The lifecycle of Big Internet

We discuss how predatory big tech platforms live and die by luring people in and then decaying for profit.

Embrace, extend and extinguish

We also discuss how naturally open technologies like the Fediverse can be susceptible to corporate takeovers, rugpulls and subsequent enshittification.

Reddit is shit these days, out of control mods, the overpowering use of AI to delete posts and ban users. It’s become terrible and quickly not worth using.

Reddit spokesperson: "we've seen that the experience is much better for them in the app"

Also would imagine Old Reddit (old.reddit.com) is unaffected, as usual.

Who the fuck is supposed to believe that? The official app was so famously shit that they had to crack down on alternative clients - which ultimately drove a bunch of people to quit that corporate cesspool and come to the fediverse.

Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.

Translation: "We make ~3x per user in advertising revenue in the app vs the web"

As soon as that started last week, I stopped going on reddit altogether. They made the decision for me.

Same. At first I was annoyed but then I realised this is going to help me use one less platform.
