Can’t give free food out to people, that would be bad! Better to destroy them to keep supply and demand.
Terrible situation but hopefully this destruction at least enriches the soil and they don't poison the trees more than is standard.

Free market fundamentalism is a crazy drug. The US will destroy food production at significant costs rather than feed the hungry.
