So there are starfish that are meant to be squarish or diamond or roundish in shape. They’re called cushion stars.

The “defect” is that they’re flat instead of bulbous.

They're beautiful

There are apparently a few things that can cause a biscuit starfish to be square, with a birth defect being one of them. It can also be caused by one losing a limb.

But the search results for it are all pretty meh in reliability, so take that as you will.

Duh? Spongebob is the mother.
Familiarize yourself with our culture before making comments like this, fool.

Is it alive?

I feel like being born the wrong shape would be rather problematic for survival

This seems like the equivalent of webbed limbs, like a flying squirrel

My grandma used to knit those things

Spongebob is an odd one. He looks like a manufactured sponge, yet he's the child of natural sea sponges. I don't know if he himself has a genetic variant that makes him rectangular, or if he went through some sort of horrific surgery to make him that shape.

Reminds me I'm about due to reread the Bikini Bottom Horror, ever since it came out in.... 2020??

Was a spawn of the Im Sorry Jon genre(?) around that time
