This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

if you get scummvm and dig up some downloads, the backyard sports series (until football 2002, which itself is buggy on scummvm) is very fun

you can also buy them officially if you so choose

[–] crpknkr@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

Magic Survival. It was the inspiration for Vampire Survivors, a fantastic game in its own right. You can lose so much time to these games.

These are the best I've found that also have no trackers in them (most are in f-droid, a couple from aurora/playstore):

  • shattered pixel dungeon (roguelike)
  • breakout 71
  • endless sky (space trader)
  • pewpew live (stick shooter)
  • vroomies (odd swipe racer)
  • Datawing (super fun racer/timetrial drifting game, best out of all of them IMO. Not on f-droid)
  • the frostrune (point and click adventure)
  • ScummVM (emulator for classic point and click games, many of which are free)
  • Arx Libertatis (an engine to run Arx Fatalis, though you need the OG game files, which isn't free, but... Yarr)

I think Star Wars Kotor and Kotor 2 have android ports. Those are great RPG's, but not free.

[–] sunshine@lemmy.ml 2 points 13 hours ago

Datawing is so good dude. I've played expensive Steam games with far less enjoyable gameplay and funny writing.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 5 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

While not free, I can recommend both Slay the Spire and Balatro as ideal mobile games. You won't regret it if you manage to find the spare cash

[–] MrKoyun@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Plus Dead Cells, however for some reason I cannot comprehend it has that annoying "Something went wrong" message for if you don't have Play Store installed/enabled. (I think this is a part of Play Integrity)

[–] koella@lemmy.zip 1 points 17 hours ago

I second both of these. Add in Rogue Adventure and Polytopia, and you will be set for years of commuting.

Depending on what you'd want to emulate, emulators can be very efficient on low-end hardware (i.e. gpSP for GBA).

[–] halloejsovs@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But often times ultra shit on screen controller

[–] Zedstrian@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Inexpensive Bluetooth controller options are available to solve that problem too, though I was just suggestion the basics.

[–] TaeKwonDoh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

USB-C controllers that plug into the phone's charging port are also a good option. Just remove the protective casing and slide it in.

Been emulating for years with it, but it's also good for mobile games that do well with controllers. BackBone is the first one that comes to mind.

I can confirm that both of these are great if you like either puzzles or rogue-likes, respectively. Simon Tatham's Puzzles is easily my top played mobile game.

This isn’t related to the question, but:

Excuse me, is that the promotional art for Total Overdose, a game I had only assumed had been lost to time and everyone forgot existed (not that it was good)?

[–] explodIng_lIme@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yes it is! And the game isn’t lost to time, it’s available on GOG. Though I admit it was a lot better when I was 12

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Can also search through MiniReview. It has a robust filtering system including monetization type, network connectivity, and sub genres that is way better than any other way I've seen to find games on your own

[–] vogi@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

Any picross game. Don’t have android so I don’t have anything specific to recommend, but it was my goto time killer before switching to books.

I've really been enjoying Slice and Dice. A rpg dungeon crawler where your party and enemies abilities are represented by 6 sided dice. Each face has an attack, defense or debuff ability. You can collect items and level up your characters through the dungeon. The more you play the more classes, items enemies and game modes you unlock.

The game state saves when you close your phone or leave the app and there's enough rng that gameplay doesn't get stale. You can play it with your phone in vertical or horizontal orientation and with only your thumb so your other hand is free

Just started playing, looks really good so far

[–] passenger@sopuli.xyz 1 points 11 hours ago

It's amazing. I was totally hooked until finish.

Three that I like to play when commuting

Breakout 71 https://f-droid.org/en/packages/me.lecaro.breakout/ - This one is great though all the powerups make it a bit too easy if you play it for a while. But it's a good one if you just want get into playing something quickly.

Ball2Box https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.simondalvai.ball2box/ - It's a pretty simple game but surprisingly addictive if you're like me trying to get a perfect score on each level (there's a ton of levels).

Calculate https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.rechnen.app/ - Practice doing math in your head!

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Try games from yiotro, particularly Antiyoy - great strategy/puzzle games, even if graphically modest. Card Crawl is also pretty good if you like a quick card game. If you want foss, Gauguin is a cool sudoku-like on fdroid.

[–] BruisedMoose@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

Offline Games from JindoBlu.

A variety of timewasters with more added pretty regularly.

[–] alakey@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How dare you use Total Overdose with that title :(

[–] ZindaDil@sopuli.xyz 2 points 22 hours ago

Only not nsfw image availiable in gallary

Man I love games practically more than anything but you don't need to be plugged in all the time. Reading a fantastic book is a way more fulfilling use of your time on transit compared to playing a shitty mobile game.

[–] Sidyctism2@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

... And playing a fantastic mobile game is way more fulfilling than reading a shitty book.

[–] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Ima be honest I don't believe such a thing exists. I think mobile games kind of necessarily max out at "alright"

[–] ZindaDil@sopuli.xyz 1 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

You should really visit lahore

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 13 hours ago

Can books not be read in Lahore?

[–] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

Why is that?

[–] DishaweslemOride@lemmy.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man, you know what I really love? Going into posts asking for things and then criticizing people for asking for those things, pushing my own beliefs on them.

[–] endless_nameless@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago
