A new study led by University of British Columbia researchers has found that pet cats allowed to roam outside unsupervised carry infectious diseases at rates comparable to feral cats, even when they receive veterinary care, regular meals, and shelter.

YSK there isn't a set of standardized vaccinations for cats. If yours lead an outdoor lifestyle, ask your vet about additional vaccinations that can help mitigate some risks.

Obligatory disclaimer: "Keep your cats inside lest they kick off a mass extinction"

If you're vet isn't asking if your cat goes outside, get a new vet. They know this and should be asking.

Many people adopt a cat, get told "it has it's shots", and assume that means all of them. And an unfortunate number of those do not have the extra cash for non-emergency vet visits where they might learn otherwise.

Thanks for the heads up on special vaccines. I once again find myself wondering if the family farm cats are better or worse than neighborhood roaming cats.

Farm cats save untold thousands (millions?) in ag equipment repair from rodent damage yearly, without using poisons that harm other wildlife. So they get a pass from me as a working animal.

My cats never go outside. And so as not to hurt their feelings, we tell them they're too fierce for the coyotes.

We tell our's that there are bad, bad owls who would snatch him the second he's off the porch. And he's a scaredy cat so it has worked so far. :3

they are at risk of getting fiv/FLV from feral cats, and likewise any communcible disease from the pet cat.
