I've been wondering how long this would take, it's exciting to see some progress!

Pretty cool to see. Small factor devices to play Steam games... through emulation, who would have thought we come so far. Unfortunately this is based on Android and I do not want to use Android, unless it is modified and has nothing to do with Google anymore (such as /e/OS a modified Android).

Edit: Wait a second, this is replacing the Android operating system on the device?

Yes, it looks to be a Linux system instead of android.

You are right! https://rocknix.org/

ROCKNIX is an immutable Linux distribution for handheld gaming devices focused on retro gaming emulation.

However I could not find on what it is based on.

Name reminds me of rockbox, which is a Linux-based firmware for digital audio players. I'm not sure if the name is intentional but this looks to be a similar idea but for gaming handhelds.

Thanks. Ah goddamnit, I was on that page already, but overlooked that as I did not recognize the name while quick scanning many pages. So after researching a bit more, I come to the conclusion that JeOS itself is a main distribution that is not based on another, right?

Not a Linux distro expert. Was wondering the same. Found the answer.... So shared it.

Immutable distros interest me...

That's actually based

For those not prepared to replace their OS, I've been enjoying this project the last couple weeks.

Sweet! Unfortunately, my Anbernic RG 351P won't have enough enough power for any of the games on Steam. Still really cool.

Edit:

Currently, this is available on “Qualcomm-based” handhelds

Oh well, I don't own any of those.

[–] network_switch@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Qualcomm was relatively quick with the 8 Elite gen 5 open source adreno drivers. I think they recognize that we may be finally entering the premium gaming on ARM and they can benefit from Android phones and handhelds and soon in the future more handheld Linux gaming pcs

been using my RP5 since launch as a steam handheld just on android alone.

as long as you have a strong WiFi connection it's baller.
