Super simple recipe:
1.5 lbs stew meat
2.5 cups beef broth
5 oz tomato paste
5 carrots, chopped
1 white onion, chopped
3 stalks of celery, chopped
Sage to taste
Garlic powder to taste
Dash of cinnamon

Throw it all together in the instant pot and pressure cook on high for 30 minutes. Serve over rice or egg noodles with a big hunk of crusty bread.

Wait until you're using it to make real broth. Pressure cookers are a miracle.

Bought my wife Tefal pressure cooker. She made a simple soup with just beef, potato, carrot cubes and a bit of spices. Meat came out so soft you could peel it with your fingers.

When we do chicken soup, meat effortlessly falls off bones. Pressure cookers are crazy! I'm a big fan!

Welcome to the club lol! I love my instant pot especially for cooking soaked beans.

My instant pot actually does rice really well too. But if you only have one, the timing isn’t great.

Potatoes entered the chat

EDIT: 30s later I realized this may have made more sense in my head. Root veggies have better timing so I sub potatoes for rice. I make rice in it when I do stir fry tho.

2c Rice, 2c water, 3 min manual and 10 min natural release. Instant perfect rice.

I gave both an instant pot and a Zojirushi and it wasn’t until your comment that I realized I should use both at the same time. I’ve mostly used my instant pot to make chili or oat meal.

The beef stew looks great Pablo. I’ll need to try to make that.

Yeah I've had the thing for years and only really used it for rice until now.

You I’m surprised that my mini rice cooker perfectly cooked curry stew like dish. It’s amazing if you want scaled down portions. That’s op for highlighting success on crockpots. Just wanted highlight how wonderful your rice cookers are.

NEVER BUY STEW MEAT. It's usually round steak (gluteus) which gets tough when you cook it unless you use meat tenderizer. Buy center blade chuck steaks and cut it up into large chunks as they shrink. CostCo has them. Safeway probably not. And why would you buy from meat counter that stinks?

Don't just toss everything into the instant pot. It doesn't brown which creates flavor. Brown the meat in the pot, then add the spices for a minute to let the "bloom". Water is fine but a dry red wine is so so much better.

At the very least buy the right meat and brown it. That will make all the difference.

If you're getting your meat from Costco, get the $4/lb whole brisket and a vacuum sealer.

NEVER BUY STEW MEAT

100% agree with this because they always leave the poxy grizzly bits and use the shittiest cut they can get away with unless you go to an actual butcher but...

It's usually round steak (gluteus) which gets tough when you cook it

This I can't get behind. Chunk of round, cut it yourself to remove the grizzle and leave it on a low and long simmer and it turns out great. Nice and lean and melts in your mouth. Nom nom nom.

Edit: I am buying large chunks though as I have a lot of mouths to feed so it's worth that effort. Always pass some over to my elderly neighbour too and she always comments on the meat being great. Beef stew is my comfort food of choice.

Gristle, not grizzle. But it's not your fault. The English language is an abomination.

[–] khannie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

TIL. Thanks!

I should really try to use my instant more often.

That looks delicious! I made a stew in mine today, too (I needed to use up some leftovers). I haven't tried yogurt yet, but I intend to.

[–] sparklehedgehog@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I tried yogurt a while ago. Put it in little jars and stacked them in, so it was single-serve. Worked great and really easy!

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

You can make all kinds of great stuff! I like chicken wild rice soup!
