DIminishing Returns - Dan Mangan (English)

From Dan Mangan's Natural Light album, released in May 2025.

Dan Mangan is a longstanding favourite of mine, and I believe I nominated Call Me Up High last Lemmyvision. As such, here's some bonus Dan Mangan tracks:

Edit: extra plug, Dan Mangan will be doing some BC shows in September, maybe I'll see you there!

Angine de Poitrine comes to mind, but I think they are an international hit...

[–] Nils@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You should recommend a song from them.

From what I could gather in the Lemmyvision post, they created this rule because Germany sent Rammstein one of the years. Angine de Poitrine is big, but not 10M views in a single song big.

*edit: this one is a banger https://anginedepoitrine.bandcamp.com/track/fabienk-2

They absolutely kick ass.

[–] Grizzlybur@piefed.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I feel like if it is decided its not an international hit, Angine de poitrine must be the representative. They have just been absolutely blowing up lately.

They are now the "most viral band" on spotify across the world.
I guess one could argue that when their first album came out, they were pretty much unknown, so it must count for something.

@inlandempire@jlai.lu, can you weigh in on if this artist would count as an international hit?

I'm preparing our poll now, and I can exclude this nomination if it is too big. These two songs were nominated from this artist:

[–] inlandempire@jlai.lu 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hey, checking the band out, they only just got big recently apparently so that's good by me! Any of those two you send will be fine 😄

Suffer - Boy Golden (English)

Never heard of Boy Golden, and only heard this song on the radio while driving a month or so ago. Thank goodness for our modern high tech radios, I noted the song info, and it is now in my regular offline backup MP3 collection.

[–] Nils@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Thank you for the recommendation, first time I hear of Boy Golden (btw don't search the other way around, some sort of anime smut). Suffer is solid, and the whole CD is great. Saving the link for bandcamp friday https://yaboygolden.bandcamp.com/album/best-of-our-possible-lives

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

I should've included Bandcamp links, it's a good way to support the artists. Thanks!

[–] bluejade@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I've been singing along in the car every time it comes on since last year. I am that much of a dork. great tune. Most of his work is a bit folky/bluegrassy for my taste but it grows on you

[–] yardy_sardley@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

This song is so big in my part of the country it's hard to believe it's not an international hit. Good nomination!

[–] EatYourOrach@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

Slanted - Shad (English)

If he's new to anyone scrolling by, I've been listening to Shad for over a decade now and my favourite track of his is Fam Jam. Classic Canadiana.

[–] Nils@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

[English] The Free Label - Dancing on Your Own https://thefreelabel.bandcamp.com/track/dancing-on-your-own

Learned about them on Musora, they made a cover of Alice in Chains - Them Bones

[–] opi@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

No idea this band existed but holy shit are they good. Thanks for the suggestion.

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Meta, but I wonder if there is some way we could create an ongoing playlist for these noms?

Would any service but youtube work?

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm happy to pin a playlist if someone wants to maintain it :)

Otherwise we will probably make a playlist or two once all the nominations are in

[–] MyBrainHurts@piefed.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm going to regret this when not high, but I'd be happy to maintain a list if someone can suggest a service with which to do so that isn't youtube.

(Fine, maybe if we have to via youtube but I have to think one of you groovy folks know of something better.)

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Thank you!

Last I checked, there wasn't a good way to mirror playlists across different platforms. Maybe I'll just post on here and ask if there are suggestions

My nominations for French language:

Fabienk by Angine de Poitrine.

It is quite the upcoming and popular band, and they are something entirely unique and Quebecois. Although, arguably there is no French being spoken in the music persay, but they are from Saguenay Quebec. If they don't count as an international hit already, this is absolutely my top choice.

Stable by oui merci.

This song is rather unlike their other music, and for the better in my opinion. This is really catchy and distinct from other music and is pleasant to listen to.

Dogue by Ariane Roy

Very slow but methodic, and sung with a rather beautiful voice.

Anarcolique by Jérôme 50

Jérôme is an absolutely wonderful artist and I would struggle to imagine someone more fit to represent Quebec in music than the artist who made the iconic Tokébakicitte. He is clearly proud of being from Quebec and keeps his music rooted in that. This would be my second top nomination.

I really want to nominate P'tit Belliveau, but he has not released any songs in 2025 or sooner :(

I'll post some more nominations for the English language category, as well as some for the first nations languages. I found and know of a couple of artists who might fit that description -- I feel like im awfully uncertified to judge their music though since its so culturally different to what I know and I do not understand the language even a bit. Feels wrong to just rank it purely based on how it sounds without knowing the content and cultural context, y'know?

[–] Grimpen@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay, technically late, but I'm surprised no one nominated The Beaches - Last Girls At The Party (English). It's probably a little mainstream for Lemmy? Seems to be getting lots of radio play, and fairly popular (or at least Canadian popular).

I'll nominate them, if an exception can be made, even though I already nominated a couple of other songs. Otherwise, add them to the playlist and jam out. The real prize is the music we listened to along the way.

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

No problem, I'm still making the polls/playlists and there's no limit to the number of nominations per user. I'll look into the popularity side to see if it is submittable

Solid music, great song, thanks for recommending!

Not a big fan of the art on their most recent discs, https://headstones.bandcamp.com/album/burn-all-the-ships

[–] WUPHF@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Nils@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Thanks for recommending another banger.

What a great album! It is hard to pick a favourite from there. I like Cruel lyrics, that 12 Wings is an earworm, the riff and the chorus are stuck in my mind. And that bass line and drums on Pulling Leeches, well, the whole song is chef's kiss.

I will leave this here as Bandcamp Friday is coming (May 1st) https://brknlove.bandcamp.com/album/the-program
