I don't get the thing about pixels: you unlock the bootloader and keep using Google's android or install whatever rom , relock or not the bootloader (it does secure your device) and go on with your life. The fact the devices bootloader is locked when bought doesn't mean you cannot unlock it.

Manufacturers claim security to justify locked bootloaders and voided warranties. Real security means the user controls the device and can audit what runs on it. Vendor lockout is the opposite of security. The only thing it protects is the vendor revenue stream.
