Motorola with GrapheneOS for me because: I don't have the money to make a choice, and I already know GrapheneOS well enough. BUT if I had more freedom to choose, I would keep my old phone and try Jolla with Linux. I know that it's not a useful answer, but in the past I have always switched between multiple Linuxes, or between iOS and Android, and it gave me a good experience and comparison in this ever changing landscape.

If I were you, I would keep the Jolla for 2 or 3 years and try to understand how it's better or worse than the other OS. As long as you properly backup your files, emails, passwords, and calendars, switching back to GrapheneOS or anything else shouldn't be a problem.

Last but not least, the Motorola phone may not be available immediately, which means it's not a choice for anyone right now. Don't be a slave to the FOMO mindset.

Given we need alternatives, and the fact that Graphene is still Android, which is controlled by Google. I would go with Jolla and SailfishOS.

I also preordered the Jolla phone. I don't like the direction Google is taking android and i like supporting a pure european phone, and im working on Linux a lot these days.

Jolla/Sailfish is perhaps more practical. (Myself, I am using Linux phones since Nokias N900, of which Jolla is a new start from former Nokia employees, formed after Microsoft bought Finland's Nokia and nuked its Linux developments). Also, Sailfish / Maemo / Mer / MeeGo is mostly open source, it is an RPM-based Linux system which unlike Android OS is maintained by an Open Source community.

What is proprietary in Sailfish is some UI components. The bigger problem, however, are firmware and drivers since ARM systems do not have a BIOS or UEFI system, and firmware is often non-free.

Damn I want the Jolla phone but I'm in the US. Anyone with experience with a jolla phone in the US?

How polished of an experience do you need? AFAIK there is no esim support with Jolla phones yet, which is crucial for me.

At this moment there is no real competition to GrapheneOS in terms of privacy, security, and overall maturity. I would suggest to buy a second hand Pixel 7a or newer.

If you can please also keep supporting Linux alternatives. I wish there was more political will to fund alternatives outside the US

Tldr: GrapheneOS for Normie apps, Jolla for FOSS exclusive phone.

IMO take GrapheneOS, because when it comes to security, there is basically no competition. You need the security if you want to use normie proprietary apps. There is just so much cancer in that ecosystem, it is unbelievable, furthermore, you're handing the malware an unbelievably capable sensor platform with centimetre accurate positioning systems, motion sensors which can gauge your weight, age and gender, microphones and cameras. You NEED the protection that GrapheneOS gives you.

On the other hand, if you only want to use FOSS on your phone, then SailfishOS is also a good choice. But due to security, it is highly recommended that you stay away from normie apps.

I’m jealous that you have access to the Jolla phone

My POV (having not used a Jolla phone) is that it's likely to be less convenient than GrapheneOS (I do use Graphene). I understand SailfishOS has an android compatibility layer but I assume there will be random apps that don't work well with it (Graphene isn't free of this either). That said, I want consumers to have more options, which means there needs to be early adopters willing to accept limitations or inconvenience to build up the ecosystem of alternatives, so if you're willing to do that, I think you should. I realize this is selfish in some ways, but it's also good in the bigger picture.

I wouldn't be surprises if the Motorola phone gets heavily delayed and eventually cancelled (I have no inside knowledge, but have been hopeful about too many things that get cancelled to be optimistic until it's widely available). As such, I think another benefit of Jolla is it's more likely that you'll get one (in a reasonable time).
