because it's hardware you can own and do things with

I haven't even been modding mine that hard — the silver memory card from my previous post has had FMBC on it for like a decade, but I've barely used it at all. Last year was an exception because for some reason I decided I want to play Metroid Fusion on PS2. I've been thinking of getting an SSD to load games from for years, but never got around to do it.

I personally have that Bitfunx PSxMemCard and loading games of off SD card using it is a blast. For me it is also useful as I have 2 consoles in different locations - slim and fat so I can just bring that accessory when I want to play on either console. It is also a requirement for me to play as sadly the drives on both of those are yet to be repaired :(

That sucks. I dread the day my drive dies.

I've just bought a PS3 for €63 last week and flashed the Evilnat CFW. A really fun little toy, but I don't think I'd consider a PS2 in 2026.

I sure wouldn't consider PS2 for the only game machine, but I guess it's a cool supplement. Even though many games have aged poorly, some still feel fine.
