Readme updated today: > > This repository is no longer actively maintained. > > The TrueNAS build system previously hosted here has been moved to an internal infrastructure. This transition was necessary to meet new security requirements, including support for Secure Boot and related platform integrity features that require tighter control over the build and signing pipeline. > > No further updates, pull requests, or issues will be accepted. TrueNAS; friend, buddy, pal,... Come on.

My NAS and phone are my only devices not running NixOS. You're a glorified dashboard. Don't tempt me.

What is TrueNAS?

TrueNAS is a high performance data platform for managing any type of data, delivered through turnkey self-healing storage appliances and expert around-the-clock support.

That's from their website, but it sounds like a bad AI slop answer. I guess they're trying to lean into the b2b more since that's where the money is.

Better answer, historically:

TrueNAS is a Network-Attached-Storage focused OS which originally was based around FreeBSD and ZFS but now comes in Linux editions (known as TrueNAS 'core' and 'scale' respectively). It's less-often in "turnkey appliances" (e.g. the qnap's of the world) and more often used by people upcycling their old PCs into a NAS / server

That sounds so much more useful than their website self description.
