Man, I am so split over this. On the one hand, I want more Bloodborne, however it comes: remake, sequel, Happy Meal tie-in - whatever. On the other, I'm so relieved to hear that the creatives have such a high level of respect and self-control to leave the game as is and not expand upon it.
Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes
This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".
Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.
Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:
[BB] This enemy is so difficult!
or
[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?
Friends:
Should you have any questions, please do let me know.

The desire for more is understandable, but my mind reels with what you would actually do with a BB sequel.
Unless you flip the script and the hunter who ascended at the end has created its own nightmare?
Beats me, what would you hope for?
A prequel showing the invasion of the Fishing Hamlet and that entire arc of Gherman and Maria's tutelage, or maybe something about the Pthumerians would be cool. I'd take anything really as long it makes sense within the lore of the game
I hadn't considered a prequel. But too much explaining of how the original game began could bring down the air of mystique, somewhat. I like the setting as a striking melodrama with layers of vibes obfuscating a body of quizzical lore, which is basically From's house style at this point.
Aside from the lore and the gameplay that make Bloodborne worth revisiting, the fascination for me is how intricately the first game subverted the hero myth at almost every step (did you ever watch that OTH vid?) It left a big impression on me.
I would love for any sequel to have the same profundity of darkness. If they were right about all that subtext being intentional, then to me that means any worthwhile successor is going to be an intellectually heavy lift, more than anything else.

I share this sentiment, and I'm so glad they've been so protective with the IP ( and that the suits at sony have respected it) since anything added could definitely substract from the original.
I just experienced this with DS3,
Tap for spoiler
I'm playing for the first time right now, just reached Anor Londo and... I'm pissed. :/ it feels so cheap, forcibly tacked on, and worst of all: the area is painfully uninteresting. In short, I hate it. Why have it at all???
Surely the lore could have been handled in a multitude of ways, but they prioritized nostalgia bait.
But I trust FS to not make this mistake again, and if they ever do decide to release more Bloodborne I'll be there day one, but I'm also fine, and understand if they don't.
I'm stuck in an odd position with DS3. It was the Souls game where everything clicked for me, and I was able to go back and beat DS1 afterwards. It's the From game I'm probably the least critical of, even though I can never really argue with its critics. For any flaws real or imagined, it's the Souls game that made me a lifelong fan of the genre.
That said, FromSoft seems like their clarity and execution with regard to their creative aims improve with every new release, more often than not; I'm always intrigued, even when it's not for me.
I get it. other than what I mentioned I've been having a great time with the game. Wording was harsh but it's the first time I've felt let down by a choice made by the studio.
In any case, all these news have been reasuring that if anything comes, it will be quality. :)
Absolutely agree. It's something I'd want as a fan of the game, just to have to more to experience and play, but I'm not sure if it'd damage the reputation of the game in the long run for the same reasons you mention. It's purposefully vague and leaves lots of room for interpretation and that's what makes the game great.
I'll have a watch, thanks! Feel free to write a comment in the pinned post where users can suggest videos to watch. I'll add it to the post. The goal is to have a big list of videos to watch about soulslikes. :)
Absolutely.
Done & done!
There's a lot they could fix and improve with a remake or remix.
- weapon balance, spreading weapons out though the game.
- chalice dungeon balance and a better tie in with the story
- smoother story progress, not getting lost on where to go next
I'm playing the game through again right now, and it's undeniably brilliant, but it's not perfect.
I could see that. I never got as far as the chalice dungeons (fast Souls fuck me up, Sekiro curved me too), but I have heard all those complaints from others.
I will never understand why someone would want a studio to spend their time remaking a game that exists, as if that will fix all its flaws without introducing new ones, rather than making a new game.
Do you understand how soul-crushingly dull it must be to work on building from the ground up a game that already exists? That is an environment which is utterly poisonous to a creative mind. There never has been and never will be a good remake of anything.
I just want to play it on PC ಠ_ಠ
Technically, you can if you're ok with emulation
But is it complete? Last I checked the full games didn't run on emulation. If it is now full, I hope I can run it on Linux
I played through the whole game + DLC last year at 4k resolution, 60FPS, on a 3080. Definitely had a few crashes here and there but nothing that lost progress. I wouldn't play it any other way.
What emulator did you use?
Probably ShadPS4 cause it's the only one
RPCSX not an option?
No they said they played on their 3080 so I'm assuming no they didn't play on Linux or Android.
Edit: especially with their last update being 2023. No I don't see them as a viaby option
I used ShadPS4. I haven't kept up with development of any others. Are there any others running retail games in a playable state?
This seems to also point out the creative bankruptcy of game developers. All they care about is using existing IP to make up for their lack of talent.
FromSoft put in the time and effort to iterate on their designs and cultivate and train their talent.
I mean they even reuse games. How many re-releases haven’t there been at this point? If you want something new, you look at the indie scene.
I don’t mind rereleases because sometimes we want old games on new hardware. Like owning a movie on VHS and buying a Blu-ray version.
We just need a fucking port please please please
Well, considering that PS games won't be published on PC anymore, I couldn't care less.
Like I mentioned in another post about this revelation, I wonder if The Duskbloods is what they mean to do as a rivist to Bloodborne. It basically looks like another BB game, it just doesn't use the name. It even shares being a console exclusive! 😩
