you'd think that this would carry some sort of punch or realization with american liberals and conservatives, but each one i've shared this with thinks that it's meaningless.

This is just wrong. Multiple countries don’t celebrate May Day.

For example we celebrate Labour Day in Australia on a different date because we got the 8 hour work day decades before the rest of the world. It makes no sense for us to follow a later date based on a US strike.

And America celebrates Labor Day on the first Monday of September and this also predates the meeting of the Second International who chose the first of May.

So as far as your meme goes, it’s inaccurate and America was ahead of everyone celebrating May Day…
