Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Britain is part of Europe, these headline writers are so incompetent.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

It's a british website. Media often explicitly name their location even for news of supraregional relevance to pull in their audience. Just basic media stuff.

Thats fair tbh if they want to directly address their local audience.

It sort of makes sense with Britain no longer being part of the EU. At least, that's the only reason I can think to put it that way.

We’ve always referred to it as the continent or europe. Britain has never seen itself as fully part of Europe. Only for the 40 years of membership in the EEC/EU and then only politically in certain circumstances, not culturally.

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

That makes sense. Thanks for further background

Yep, this is all part of Trumps plan to boost right wing parties accross Europe.

[–] Senseless@feddit.org 3 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

This guy is too much of a sociopath to care about that. He tries to cover his hairy orange ass by diverting news to something else than the Epstein files.

I think it’s pretty likely that this is part of the plan. Massive refugee waves will destabilize the EU just in the way they want. Either the EU goes full “don’t come here”, with walls, camps, deportation, etc. which will dwarf the current US immigration situation (thus improving their image), or they go “refugees welcome” again, which will skyrocket right wing parties. And not few mainstream politicians will be too intimidated or otherwise compromised to call it out, so the uniformed citizen will just see that somehow “it’s raining immigrants” again and “politicians are not doing enough”. Not unsolvable, but close to a checkmate.

Either the EU goes full “don’t come here”, with walls, camps, deportation, etc. which will dwarf the current US immigration situation by far (thus improving their image),

It'll also directly lead to fascism in like half of Europe, which I think would be more impactful than some good PR for Trump.

Yeah basically either the main stream parties become right wingers or are voted out. But also, why are voters so stupid to not see through this obvious trap. Essentially, it is the right wingers who are “flooding” their beloved “western civilization” with immigrants, for their short-sighted goals. The least the opposition can do is call this out crystal clear on a 10 minutes tact. Hate the immigrants, then hate what’s sending them, not poor displaced people that don’t even want to be here and politicians with little realistic options.

But also, why are voters so stupid to not see through this obvious trap.

Desperation. They want someone to do something for them, and with leftwing politics being moribund in the developed world and the only option promising that is the far right. Everything else is ultimately secondary.

The least the opposition can do is call this out crystal clear on a 10 minutes tact.

Except the mainstream opposition is also pro-capitalist imperialism. They hate leftwing politics more than they hate fascism, because one is much worse for their donors, so when it's either or they'll throw their lot with the fascists.

[–] linule@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Moribund politics is center, not left wing, which is seeing increases all across the west as well. Not as much as right wing, because it’s not well funded, but that’s not intrinsically necessary.

Trump himself is just a puppet of the oligarchists.

These types of people are afraid of their own shadows
