FWIW I think its kind of a waste of time to debate the merits of any Ayatollahs when you could be talking about the international situation more broadly. You're accepting the liberal framing of personal merit over more systemic issues.

The elevation of the Shaw (King) to absolute rule is largely seen as a US puppet. This is one of the first regime changes in the Cold War, and establishes the blueprint for :cia: covert programs. Fast forward to the later 1970s and there are major protests that lead to the fall of the Shah and established an Islamist state under Khomeini. During the revolution the US embassy was stormed by students and revolutionary forces and hostages taken for over a year.
