Without getting into the politics, this is the kind of act that makes groups with perfectly valid claims and arguments unpopular with the public. These are intelligent people, why is it so hard for them to understand that whilst I might support them for their beliefs etc, now I will not.

I completely agree. Like it or not if you want your protests to become a movement you have to appeal to "normal" people. When a normal person sees a statue of a person they consider a hero being vandalised or they see a protest full of people with dreadlocks, green hair, and hippy clothes they're just going to dismiss it as an alternative culture that they don't relate to.

If I'm being cynical here it almost makes me believe that some of these people care more about their identity and image than they do about the cause. They'll go to all the effort of turning up to these things but they can't even get a haircut and throw on a shirt. I'm going off on a tangent here.

What does the length of someone's hair have to do with anything?

If we wish to normalise self expression we need to self express. If everybody becomes short haired shirt wearing drones then any expression of individuality becomes deemed even more extreme than it already is.

I understand the point of vandalising a statue of a highly regarded politician and "war hero" not achieving much but garnering public ire, but the point of people dressing and wearing their hair as they please just screams intolerant judgemental arsehole.

The length of someone's hair has to do with people's internal prejudices about them... unfortunately.

You're calling this guy bigoted for just pointing that out. Now, imagine the viewpoint of someone who actually holds disdain for long-haired fellows and we begin to see how we may be beholden to at least some societal congruence - at least if we want our message heard.

A tangent I've been down myself, I think recent climate action groups protests have shown how ultimately ineffective this kind of antagonistic attention seeking protest actions are. Pink yachts and stopping traffic causes more avoidance of the issue supposedly cared about. I've always thought the only way to get any kind of productive attention from governments or large corporations, or government via large corporations is to interrupt the flow of money. If one dislikes big oil, get a bike. All that being said, when I was an angry young man I took part in my share of protest marches, marching for the very rights now enjoyed by the people we are commenting on here. I wonder if I would advise that youngster to march again,now I've seen today's protests?
