I have recently been into this one, Carrion Fields, again after a year or so of hiatus, but it's really obtuse and difficult to get into. That being said, the community is generally friendly to newbies. I think the main thing to keep in mind if you're going to play it is to not get too attached to your first character and accept that they will be a training or practice run until they die or until you decide to re-roll.
I don't have wiki links handy at the moment, but I also recommend the Discworld MUD and Lost Souls. You will definitely want wiki assistance for all three of these, which may sound very daunting but it's something that you can just have open in a different tab or window and refer back to when in-game help files don't help or if you just want to poke around and see what can be found.
