General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Even if there is a investigation, it'll probably go in a similar direction as the Russia Report a few years ago: stalled, played around like a political football, then forgotten about, or anything meaningful being "out of scope".

Kind of surprised it's only 75000

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 3 points 6 days ago

Genuine question, where does Israel get all this money and influence to infiltrate such world powers?

Russia I get, with their population their government has lots of resources and is isolationist.

But then here is Israel, small country, very integrated into the western world; yet can get away with shit that even china can’t pull off (just exaggerating, I’m sure china meddles too).

Theres also the position that many of our current politicians don't need to be paid off to support israel. Their racism and genocidal beliefs align with the goals of the occupation for free.

The USA ia the main target of their meddling and you literally witness both parties unilaterally aignjng off on agreements to give them billions of dollara all at once in random one off payments.

Also - Epsteim worked with Mossad, which shows that their methods involved blackmailing EVERYONE

Well it all started back in the times of the Roman Empire.........

(It's a really long story)

Edit: starting with the money part at least

I think they just have to have enough political figures kompromised, so that it tips the balance in their favour. If as it is strongly suspected, that Epstein was a Mossad agent, then it was likely that this was a core part of his purpose, befriend the powerful, film them and take pics of them with kids, mission complete, a political figure on a string, it's a very shrewd evil plan when you think about it.

It's in the interest of international finance capital to keep the middle east unstable, Israel fulfils that goal.

I'd sign, but I've absolutely lost faith that this government won't then disclose the list of names to a third party.

They've hardly been operating with transparency when it comes to this kind of stuff.

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 26 points 1 week ago

If you are NOT on a government watch list by now you should be ashamed of yourself.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In the same vein as what SeeMarkFly said. If we're all on a watch list then none of us are.

They only have so many resources to go around.

Authoritarianism thrives on fear and people keeping quiet. Be as vocal as possible and encourage friends and family to do so as well, before it's too late. The more of us there are, the less repercussions they can bring down upon us.

In solidarity.

It's a noble sentiment that I'd love to support but historically if you look at countries like Chile, fascists will round up masses of people. I've always not understood why anti-fascists don't plan for contingencies like having to go underground - especially as we can see the way things are travelling in places like the UK.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No need to do their fearmongering for them.

Fascists are never as powerful as they project. Their whole ideology consists of scaring people into line because they don't have the means to do it any other way. Don't let the bastards win.

Our strength is in numbers, we outnumber them immensely, not fracturing into individualists in some hope that it will result in self preservation. It's a stupid tactic that backfires for both the antifascist movement as a whole and individuals.

[–] tenebrisnox@feddit.uk 1 points 6 days ago

I don't disagree with you about how weak fascists are in actuality (especialy before grabbing state control). I'd be really interested to know where in history the "strength in numbers" has defeated either fascists in ascendancy or fascist regimes. Seems that guerilla warfare (or however you want to label it) has been far more decisive. The "workers united will never be defeated" slogan has proved to be... defeated.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 8 points 1 week ago

You can sign the petition, but you'd be naive to think the UK government will do anything about it.

Never again... Unless you buy the weapons directly from us.

UK government... probably.

[–] Bassman27@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is likely to go the same way every petition created since the dawn of time will go..

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Do you never get a national referendum from getting enough signatures?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

There have only ever been three national referendums, none of which were petitioned for. All were the result of backhanded skullduggery.

[–] Bassman27@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)
[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Scotland and the UK did have referendums though. So politicians can call them at least. I don't understand the clown emoji, are you calling me a clown? I think it's a reasonable question given the aformentioned referendum to leave the EU and scotland to remain in the UK, a decision they really bungled.

[–] Bassman27@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I wasnt calling you a clown but please show me a referendum which has come from the result of a petition.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 6 days ago

Oh in the US here 30 some states have them. It's how we legalized Marijuana here, soon to legalize mushrooms in some states. We took the drawing of districts out of the hands of lawmakers and gave it to an independant commission, we expanded voting rights, what else, we win progressive initiatives, it's just we don't have good progressive candidates, too weak, and not a single white guy amongst them, something is fundamentally broken here politically, but in the late 19th century or so states adopted a lot of this direct democracy to make constitutional amendments, lawmakers can't (in the states it's a constitutional amendment, some it's not, like Florida enfranchised most all felons and lawmakers added restrictions to basically make sure none could vote,) change it without like 3/4 of the legislature.

In my State, Michigan, we have the highest requirement of signatures to get something on the ballot. I forget if it's even 10% of voters in the state. A group usually pays people to gather them, a couple bucks a piece back last I did it for medical marijuana a long time ago, which was awesome I went barhopping with it, everyone wanted to sign it. Anyway they strike non registered voters so you need like 50% more than the minimum to be safe. The firms that do it had a cheating scandal a few years back and these petitions failed to get enough after turning in all of these bogus signatures.

There is still fuckery, we closed the Wolf Hunt in Michigan, we've a few hundred timberwolves back in the upper penninsula, via a petition, and lawmakers passed another version of a wolf hunt with a budget aspect making it unreferendumable. They kept the legalizing weed one off twice through corrupt fuckery in their electoral commission before Washington and Colorado led the way and they let ours through. When we raised the minimum wage in 2008 they used a loophole to pass it through after it was ok'd for the vote with a simple majority in the legislature, but removed the cost of living increase from it, so it was worthless.

Lot's of fuckery abounds but it's our only tool to fight these fuckers where we win.
