They are meant for movies, not for production
Yes, there was(is?) the pivoting display for displaying print media but that's not great either.

Yeah, you are totally right on that. Gaming in 3:4 is only better for Tetris, perhaps
Some older stuff like the original C&C games don't look good when stretched as well, I absolutely agree that 4:3 has its justifications though.
now if only we couldfigure out how to put more and more empty wasted space in them....
