It's an unofficial fan made project, but oh my god it's the tits! You play SMB, but it's got all these quality of life improvements.

Like the background and clouds aren't static like they would be in the NES. There's options to backtrack. You can change the clock to unlimited, or change the seconds to real seconds. You can change how damage is done. American style, or Japanese style.

They included Super Mario Bros Special. Which is a rare 1986 Super Mario game, which was released by Hudson Soft. In the 1986 version the screens did not scroll with you. Instead you move forward, and the screen transitions. Well this game takes those levels, and lets you play them in the original SMB engine, with SMB graphics.

They included a mode from SMB DX where you had to hunt for 5 red coins, a yoshi egg, and get a certain score.

They included a boo race mode.

And Super Mario Bros 2 (Japan)

I don't even know what All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros is.

They included resource packs, which change the graphics. They have a stage builder. You can share or download others custom levels.

It has achievements.

Guys, this game is the real deal.

I have, and it's excellent! I spent a lot of time playing it on my Steam Deck when it came out. There is also a Super Mario World Remastered by the same dev, but it was abandoned. It's not up to the same level of quality, but it's definitely the best way to play multiplayer Mario World regardless!

That's awesome. I'm definitely checking that out. Twists on SMB are one of my favorite things.

Mari0 is one that I sank a lot of time into in the late 2010s, but my all time favorite is Super Mario Bros. Crossover. It's SMB, but you can play through with basically every popular NES character with their original movesets. I'm talking using Simon's whip on goombas, spread shot taking out King Koopa as Bill Rizer. Hell, you can play through the game as Zelda II Link if you want.

That hyperlink may not be functional, as it's a flash game, but you can definitely find it on BlueArchive's Flashpoint Infinity. I recommend for all retro gaming fans.

I don’t even know what All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros is.

It's basically an official licensed Romhack, mostly (if not only I think) for graphics. "All Night Nippon" was a radio show and game was sold through lottery.

I've never heard of this but I knew one of the host names (replacing the toads) sounded familiar for some reason, turns out he was a major character in yakuza 6 lmao

It's pretty cool and feels like the definitive version of the game, very nice use of Godot engine

You can change how damage is done. American style, or Japanese style.

What does that even mean?

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

In the American release of the game if you're fire mario, and you take damage you turn into big mario. If you take damage again, you become small mario.

In the Japanese version if you're fire mario and you take damage, you instantly become small mario.

[–] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 hours ago

Nah, my American Duck Hunt/SMB Cart turns you right into small Mario.

huh, that's so odd. i have no recollection of that difference from childhood, and my ROMs don't do that either, neither in the original nor in All-Stars.

they all perform the "Japanese" way

[–] fernandofig@reddthat.com 4 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, that's what I remember too, at least for the original SMB. I think OP is either misremembering or haven't really played the original.

SMB3 did have that though.

Which damage version is implemented in the European version? My memory says Japanese-style for SMB1 and American-style for SMB3 - but given I had no idea there were regional differences, I may be totally wrong. Back then, Europe mostly got a version of the American version a considerable time later than the rest of the world so I guess it doesn’t really make sense the way I remember it 😅

neat, thanks! this is some fine work!

[–] sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works 5 points 16 hours ago

I think I'd rather just play the original

[–] captstulle@lemmy.zip 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Which Version do you mean? Which Device so you use? Ive just tried SuperMario on a Spectrum +2 😃

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

I'm on 1.1, which says it's an exparemental build. I play on my Retroid Flip 2, but you can use anything. Even a pc. Even has controller or keyboard controls, though I've never tried on a keyboard.

[–] Zarxrax@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I downloaded it the other night but I couldn't get my Bluetooth controller to connect. I'll have to remember to give it a try again.

Just a Windows PC. On certain days, Bluetooth just decides not to work.
