Are they swingers? I think I'm too awetistic to get the joke here.

Yes, you got the joke right

"You'll know who the monsters are because they are the ones that lose" is a fun implication (before I got the actual joke)

If course the next day the kids had to kill their parents: "Mom never smiled like that, the doppelgangers must have won!"

Didn't realise we were looking at the back of her head and thought she was actually a doppleganger with a weird blobby eye and mouth.

I saw a woman with voluminous hair with a head that is a potato

I thought it was a paper bag to disguise whether she was.

There's a nice short story I once read about how when people reach their 70s, they develop psychic powers and join a brotherhood/sisterhood of psychics consisting of every elderly person on the planet keeping the horrors of space at bay.

These horrors manifest as nightmares targeted at children, but the elderly fight the mental battles for them every night. The battles are hours long, mentally taxing, and the wounds manifest the next day as a slow crawl towards Dementia.

Anyway, this comic reminded me of that before I undestood the sex stuff

What was the name of the story?

I want to know too !

I read a similar story about how a child (of parents who were fighting a lot) had a teddy bear who came alive at night to "fight the nightmare monsters" which were, somehow, real. That poor teddy looked worse for wear as time went on, it was a real tear jerker. (I'm totally not tearing up just thinking about it, you're cutting onions ya bastard)

Plot twist, they were actually playing Warhammer 40k with the neighbors.

The mouseover text on the original will also help answer your question.

BUT THEY ARE LOSING.

Still don't know why they kept asking their ghostly duplicates whether they liked that over and over.
