I never heard of Wil Wheaton or Wesley Crusher being gay... did I miss something?
An Oxford comma would have cleared this all up. The homophobia was generalized, the cruelty was towards Wheaton(among others)

Never once was it implied he was gay, hell he hooked up with Ashley Judd.
He was an annoying kid, he just happened to be brilliant. That's what was being shown, how difficult it is to have a brilliant kid around/how difficult it is to be a teen, let alone a brilliant teen, even in the ST universe. Exploring this fundamental human experience (teenager) then adding a reason for bridge staff to have to engage with him.
