Additionally, the second bubble starts with an ellipsis (continuing the first's), indicating even subconsciously that you shouldn't start there.

Yeah exactly. Reading top to bottom thw right box is so much higher you read it first.
The right bubble is a lot higher than the left one, you'd probably read that one first even if this layout was used in a western comic.
