I donโt think they are, but I will choose to believe theyโre sandbagging and weโre going to see Alonso fighting at the front

Unfortunately inside sources are saying it's actually trash, the engine can't run higher RPMs due to vibrations and the AM-Honda working relationship is strained and not working well.
Aston constantly replacing core members of their team at a rate that puts Alpine to shame surely is a great foundation for steady work with a technical partner.
I'm sure that doesn't help, but it also sounds like there are quite some issues on the Honda side too. And not just with their incompetence but working culture, expectations and so on. In the end though it was idiotic to abandon the Merc engine, but Lawrence Stroll just couldn't resist a shiny new toy and the idea of being a works team.
Honda disbanded their engine team with the exception of a few mechanics that assemble existing designs for Red Bull and then a year too late Lawrence Stoll contracted a disbanded team to design and build a championship winning engine.
That's impossible and only the fault of the one who contracted them at an insanely stupid time.
Of course Honda is taking the money. They're not investing anything. They are being paid.
Although that mostly sounds plausible (I don't know much about it myself): there is reputational risk for Honda, so it's not quite nothing.
They're holding back that VTEC yo.
