When rightwingers talk about freedom of speech, they mean freedom from criticism or consequences of their rightwing crap takes, which is why you find rightwingers talking about freedom from censorship by the means of censorship.
When rightwingers talk about gun rights to help protect them from oppressive federal government, they mean freedom for rightwingers to use guns to threaten people they don't like, without consequences or criticism, which is why you find right wing people objecting very strongly to protesters (against the oppressive federal government) having a gun anywhere near them.
When right-wingers talk about liberty, they mean their freedom to do whatever the fuck they feel like without interference or criticism. They absolutely do not mean that someone with slightly darker skin than them should have the right to due process before being banged up or deported.
When right wiggers talk about abortion, they absolutely do not mean that their girlfriend shouldn't be able to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. They mean that those dirty libtards shouldn't be allowed to murder babies willy-nilly just for the fun of it like they usually do.
It shouldn't come as a surprise to any of us that when right-wingers talk about religious liberty, they absolutely do not mean that everyone is free to practice their own religion in their own way in the privacy of their own home. What they of course mean is that anyone who is not a right winger should be stopped from saying anything critical about their fake religious views, including, of course, Jesus himself, who was obviously way too woke by their standards, with his radical leftist takes like: look after the poor, be kind to foreigners, treat other people how you like to be treated, don't turn your place of worship into a business for profit, and worst of all, don't make up a bunch of religious rules that don't make anything any better, for other people to follow whilst you're not even following them yourself. Oh, and really, don't be a hypocrite. In case you missed that one.
So, no, I'm not surprised that Trump's religious liberty commission was all about suppressing dissent. Of course it was. He hates criticism. He loves people who will unquestioningly support him. People who label themselves as Christian because that's what rich white people they see are doing, but who wouldn't dream of letting it interfere with their bigotry, they are right up his street.
