Do I need to have watched the 1997 film Cube to understand Sphere?

Yes, then the third movie in the trilogy "Triangle" (2009)

That and "The Circle" were actually prequels.

Wait, is this legit, was the interpretation of the sphere as a sort of interdimensional egg that you impart not DNA but imagination with? That's freaky :D

I confused myself by thinking of Event Horizon instead of The Sphere because the stories are fairly similar. Also the Event Horizon's engine was basicslly a sphere of black goo 🤷‍♂️

I should watch both again. They're pretty awesome.

Event Horizon is the one where spacecraft lost in some warp experiment reappears. But the spacecraft in Sphere was also human and from the future. Should definitely rewatch both.

Fun fact about Event Horizon I love: It was written as if it was in the WH40K universe. The ship is basicslly the first human vessel to travel through The Immaterium and get infested with space ghosts. 😃

Tremble before the majesty of the Emperor, for we all walk in his immortal shadow.

In reality, they likely inspired each other.

When Event Horizon came out, Games Workshop was still a somewhat niche hobby that few people had heard of, they were still developing lore.

I imagine the writers saw some ideas about the "dangers of the warp" and decided to incorporate those ideas, then games workshop saw the movie and was like "Hell yeah, that's what we're talking about, lets lean into this warp shit even harder."
