For clarification, dairy in the US is heavily subsidized and as a result the US dairy industry over supplies massively. The industry wants to 1)retain this subsidies and 2) gain export markets to drive up demand so they can raise prices (including in the US). As stupid as that is domestically, for other countries no domestic dairy industry and possibly compete without equivalent subsidies or some kind of protection.
So framing this as wanting to compete in the "free market" is complete nonsense since the US is purposely distorting the shit out of the dairy market by propping up their supply side.
Your own people are most affected by tariffs. And they will add to government coffers.
That said, they're a weapon: tariffs will also affect exports to the USA of the other country. In some countries this can be a big enough issue to give in to such threats, in others, not so much.
On the plus side bourbon has been cheaper this year. Which is nice considering how much more of it I've been drinking to cope with all this shit
