It's yet another step in the worrying trend of tearing down the current update system on Android. It feels like Google is cutting down everything else just so they can put more resources into AI.

Did they give up with the update that nerfs non play store apps or are they going through with that?
It never merged them full, just added a extra hoop to jump through.I don't remember the current status but I think it still is going.

Definitely making my next phone a dumb flip phone now.
that makes no sense because feature phones are insecure devices that provide no functionality beyond unencrypted communication. It would make more sense to purchase a device that can have a third party OS (Like Graphene, Lineage, iode, or PostMarketOS) than it does to buy a feature phone.
Phone calls are also unencrypted on any third part OS you can install.
Beyond having to be available at a phone number I make public to certain individuals and companies, I essentially don't actually have to own a phone. I can do the rest of my communications via a computer, at my convenience.
But I like doomscrolling Lemmy so I'm keeping my smartphone for now. Also navigation is nice when driving.

Where do you get an encrypted phone service though? I don't know how that would even work without the other party also having to do something about it.

That's true, but my point was that I don't TECHNICALLY need to use my phone for messaging at all, it would actually feel nicer to only see messages when I'm at my designated connected-to-the-world spot. This being available 24/7 thing is very tirign
I agree with that last statement, but if someone wants to reach me during a time I am available I'd prefer them contact me via E2EE rather than legacy phone line/SMS/MMS. I'd also prefer to use a device that can't be easily broken into if i lose it.
But how will your ~~research~~ shit post from the water closet?
