Welcome!

Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.

And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome 🀟😁

It's an actual good increase but not starting the graph at zero is misleading. It didn't go from zero to the moon, it got from 1.5k to 3.5k, which is more than double, but not as exponential as the graph shows.

Yea I said the same in my other post, here is the graph form zero

Seems like a nice occasion for a reminder that this stuff is all made and run on a volunteer basis. There are many ways to contribute, but the easiest by far is by donating a little bit of money on a regular basis! Don't be deterred by feeling you have to give a lot - if a lot of people give a little that's much better. So give a little!

I use Liberapay, but patreon and ko-fi links are available under the "Donate" menu entry at piefed.social. The average LiberaPay contributor gives less than a dollar per weekβ€”which is awesome.

Alternatively, if you're on another instance, consider giving a little bit to your instance to help keep it running! It's all running on love and goodwill, and it works precisely because people like you decide it's worth contributing. :)

[–] marighost@piefed.social 6 points 20 hours ago

It's absolutely worth it to give to the Piefed project for how much effort these folks put in. If I were a developer I'd contribute that way, too.

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 26 points 23 hours ago (4 children)

We need some new (a couple) of general-use instances to help direct this traffic! Piefed.social will help you and redirect traffic to you.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 hours ago

If by "direct traffic" you mean to send them there, then I'd say we don't need that, and shouldn't want it. The whole reason federation works is because control is spread out. Giving one, or a few, instances control of most of the content and users is a horrible idea and begging for issues. Speaking of, if you're on lemmy.world, you should consider spreading elsewhere. At least don't send new people there.

[–] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 13 points 21 hours ago (4 children)

I'm working on getting https://nord.pub/ online!(rebrand from experimental nord.red) Well, it is online but I wanted proper HA, Backups, and some curated Topics.

Hosted in the Nordics and committed to not being dependent on US tech. (using Hetzner Finland and BunnyCDN)

[–] rimu@piefed.social 7 points 19 hours ago

Awesome. When you're ready, go to https://nord.pub/admin/instance_chooser and fill in the form.

[–] Blaze@piefed.zip 3 points 17 hours ago

That would be great!

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 16 hours ago

Signed up! I still might stick to this account mainly, but a Nordic oriented Piefed instance is definitely appealing.

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

You're going for a general use instance?

[–] SirHaxalot@nord.pub 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah, general use with somewhat if a focus on the Nordics "market", but I'm not planning on launching competing communities against anything existing.

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 7 points 21 hours ago

Sure, but I'm more thinking about increasing server spread across Piefed rather than specific communities as such.

[–] biltong@piefed.co.za 13 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (5 children)

PieFed.co.za is hosted in Germany

It's kinda geared towards South Africans, but it'll be a place where anyone is welcome. I still need to do some housekeeping though.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 11 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I really love that you're building a South African instance!

As much as the influx of Europeans to the fediverse is lovely to see, the European/North American bias here is really striking. That's of course not a problem of too many Europeans, but rather not enough other people.

[–] biltong@piefed.co.za 7 points 21 hours ago

Thanks, it's quite fun to setup and run an instance and helping the community grow. Hopefully I can get a bunch of South African and Africans to join my instance.

But anyone is welcome.

Quokk.au is general use and international.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 7 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (3 children)

Yep we already have a bunch of good instances ready to go:

...and ~60 more which seem to be for personal or closed-group use but which could open their doors any time - https://piefed.fediverse.observer/list

And a million more on the way!

The instance chooser thing is a great addition to PF to help get users distributed across instances.

Scalloped growth is normal for social media platforms. Don't panic when it dips

[–] rimu@piefed.social 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, MAU is a bit misleading like that... Maybe 20% of them will stick around if we're lucky.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 3 points 14 hours ago

still a win. i'd rather the people who like it and put in effort stay than be awash with people who aren't bringing much. the biggest is the more people who try it and decide to stay the more diversity of thought we'll get. the threadiverse has a very eurocentric bias (here being the sociological construct, US and Canada both contribute to eurocentricism). i don't presume this will be fixed in this bump, but it is an opportunity for us who are already here to listen to new voices

[–] atro_city@fedia.io 10 points 22 hours ago

scalloped growth

Sounds tasty and cancerous at the same time.

Wow this is great!!

[–] biltong@piefed.co.za 13 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

PS. you can see the graph starting from Zero: https://piefed.fediverse.observer/dailystats&days=2000

Credit to @squirrel@piefed.kobel.fyi for pointing out how.

[–] badabim@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Even if the graph not starting at zero could be misleading, a spike doubling the number of active user is still impressive.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 9 points 22 hours ago

It seems people stuck around after to a pretty exceptional degree after the previous surge in June last year, when the number of active users was multiplied by four within a little more than a month. Hopefully the same will be true this time around!

Also curious what's next for this graph. Doesn't really seem to be slowing down.

[–] Vorticity@lemmy.world 9 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

What is causing such sudden rapid growth?

[–] Skavau@piefed.social 15 points 22 hours ago

Multiple advertisement posts on DeGoogle, a canadian subreddit and BuyFromEu.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 12 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

A couple of successful Reddit posts. This last jump was from r/BuyFromEU.

[–] Ash@piefed.social 14 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Thats how I ended up here. Even deleted my reddit account.

[–] rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social 5 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

Me too, fellow BuyerFromEU!

Just didn't delete my Reddit yet. There's some subreddits I need there that don't have the equivalent here yet.
But the plan is to start using this as my primary, and only go there when I need those.

[–] Ash@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, for me its my city subreddit, but then again, its just lots of comments from people in neighbouring cities going on about how shit it is or how arrogant we are. Anyway, welcome too!
