Hi everyone,

I’m posting this in case it helps someone else, because I spent hours reading Reddit threads and almost opened my Steam Deck unnecessarily.

Device

• Steam Deck OLED

• Stock, not modded

The problem

Out of nowhere, my Steam Deck entered a really bad state:

• Screen completely black

• Fan ramping to maximum speed in pulses

• Power button would NOT shut it down, even holding it for 10–20 seconds

• LED kept blinking / staying on

• Could not enter BIOS or Boot Manager

• Basically stuck in a power/firmware loop

The only way to stop the fan + LED was using “… (Quick Access) + Power”, which fully killed power — but every time I tried to boot again, the problem returned.

At this point I saw many Reddit posts saying the only fix was disconnecting the battery, and I even bought tools to open it.

What actually fixed it (no disassembly)

⚠️ Important details

• My Deck was OLED

• The successful reset happened without the charger connected

• Battery had been charging beforehand

Step-by-step solution

1. Charge the Deck with the official charger for at least 1 hour

• Do NOT try to turn it on during this time

2. Unplug the charger

3. Perform a deep EC / firmware reset:

• Hold Volume – + “…”

• While holding them, press Power once

• Release everything

4. Watch the LED

• Mine blinked blue twice

• Then blinked white

• Then turned off completely

(This seems to indicate the EC reset actually executed)

5. Wait 3–4 minutes

• Do not touch any buttons

6. Plug in the charger

• Do NOT press Power

👉 After a few seconds, the screen turned on by itself and the Steam Deck booted normally.

Result

• Booted into SteamOS

• Screen OK

• Fan OK

• Sound OK

• Wi-Fi OK

• Buttons OK

• System stable

I’ve rebooted it multiple times since and the issue is gone.

Important conclusions

• This looks like a stuck EC / firmware power state, not a dead device

• Disconnecting the battery physically was NOT necessary

• The Volume – + “…” + Power (single press) reset seems equivalent to a hard EC power cut

• Doing this without the charger appears to matter

• Plugging the charger after the reset allowed the system to recover cleanly

Advice

Before opening your Steam Deck or disconnecting the battery:

• Try this reset carefully and patiently

• Watch the LED behavior

• Give it time after the reset

Hopefully this saves someone else a lot of stress (and money on tools 😅).
