There are no good options for game gear games. Just putting them on the shelf makes it impossible to know what you have you can't even write on the edge or put a side label. Case solutions I found online are basically either find DS/3ds cases and hack them all up, but these are harder to source, more expensive both for the base and the printing and they don't look the best, or you can go the customgamecases route which is insanely expensive if you have a large or complete collection. I've gone with a different option.

These are some custom cases I've made for my game gear games. These are basically my mk.1 design. There are some slight changes/additions/modifications I'm going to make to both the covers I designed and the cases themselves. I'm using standard cassette cases because they're cheap and available. The games are just a hair too big so I need to cut a hole in the side of the cases. I seen a post from Reddit where someone did a case without cutting and they either can't easily open the case or found slightly larger than average cases. I'm hoping to clean up my cutting so it at least looks a little cleaner. The place where I sanded off the post looks bad so I'm going to maybe slap a sticker over it, just haven't decided what.

I'm not saying this is the best or even a good option, I'm saying all the options suck and I'm just showing off my sucky choice.

How is home alone for the GG?

I remember it from the megs drive and still think its the best port of the game :D

So this sounds kind of stupid but Home Alone is one of the main reasons I got a game gear and started collecting for it. I'm a pretty big fan of the 16bit Genesis/Mega Drive version. The Game Gear version is almost the same game with just a few tweaks made for the 8bit version. The music takes a big step back, the houses have slightly altered layouts, the old house has a different hazard, you can find traps in snowmen outside. Basically the same game, pretty much just as fun, just slightly altered for the less powerful machine with a smaller screen resolution

Those looks amazing. Fantastic work!

Haha, these things had terrible battery life and they took like 6 AAs. Very cool for the time though.

I dug out mine out of the closet recently and was so confused when it didn't power on properly. Turns out, the .3v difference between a Duracell and an Eneloop really matter when you scale it to 6 cells!

That's weird. I have several and repaired these for a while. I put 1.2V rechargeable nimh batteries in and they work great. When I was younger and these handhelds were still the hottest shit in town I had a whole bag of rechargeable batteries on me while traveling. Modern batteries hold their charge a lot better than they used to, so things only improved over the years. Might wanna check that again.

The only way to go is a wall charger, that's how I played mine 95% of the time. I had a car charger too for road trips.

I had some luck with customgamecases.com - even got some for my 2600 carts.

Not a bad idea and way better than loose. Well done!

Yeah, I share your pain. I think I ended up 3D printing something like this but the game density is very low for shelving. So I ended up putting most things into something more like this and throwing them all into a drawer.

I'm not happy with either solution.

Maybe if this were printed by a professional...

Those are all interesting ideas but just like mine there's always some kind of catch. either cost, space or appeal. The final one you showed looks great but it is the problem of cost/time to make. I guess this is the trade-off for all of the games being dirt cheap basically.

Upon second viewing, I highly suspect he glued that cover onto the case... which will warp/peel off SO FAST. Image

There is a reason cases have a plastic shield and lips on the case to hold the cover in.

Maybe double sized CD cases with a custom printed inner part would work better.

That's a pretty big case for such a small cart

[–] db2@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, but it's harder to lose and fits shelves better.
