By sleeping far too little, I played 40 hours of dwarf fortress this week. While working a full time job. Thanks for reminding me why this game is so good

Beardrenched Episode 6: The Year of Fire
Save file: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=17726
The following are Oreb's notes from Winter 206:
Notable deaths:
- Porkroll: killed by a giant cave spider
- booty: killed by a giant cave spider
- gay king prince charles: killed by a giant cave spider
- Moonworm: died of unknown circumstances
Notable attacks:
- Stimber: a flamingo from hell with a trunk and fire. Somehow you escaped the caverns after killing Usu. You took over 40 lives and the best of our drink.
- Cuthabe: A poison water blob. One mace strike is all it took to bring them down.
- Goblin ambush: 13 thieves, stole artifacts, but we took care of most of them.
- Stuml: a lizard from hell with wings. Flew right over our walls in the lowest cavern, but our troops were ready (I was on my way) and took down the beast.
- Ngutoz: A giantess. Very quick, but we were quicker.
So many friends gone. I'm not sure how I've made it this far. Sure, I was ordered to go and fight every single one of those forgotten beasts, but I've found the trick to surviving is to just show up late.
Other notable events:
- We have been raised now a county.
- Two hillocks have been incorporated into our holdings.
- The rumors from traders are like nothing we've ever heard. Armies marching all around us.
- New defenses were set in place, but we are far from finished.
This year was our roughest yet. I hope we can get our act together.
First off, I'm really sorry everyone. With all the forgotten beasts these deaths wouldn't be surprising, but that a giant cave spider did so much damage... Again, I'm sorry. I also cannot explain how Oreb is still alive.
I started the year with the goal of upping everyone's mood, so lots of smoothing and statues and small meeting areas around high traffic points. This wasn't particularly successful.
Here are my recommendations for the next year:
- DEFENSE
- Figure out where our weak points are. I gave this my best shot, but you can see how that turned out.
- Fix the trade entrance. Again, you'll see how I've somehow completely botched it.
- Somehow improve mood. The way things are going, I feel like a tantrum spiral is right around the corner.
- Coffins and engraved slabs when you find time. Ghosts are there and more are coming.
- Most of all, good luck!
Oreb
Some more things I spent the year doing/things that happened:
- better nobles rooms
- barracks are setup for all squads
- Archers should be training now
- filled the ‘kill room’ with animal cages for live target practice
- first level of outdoor walls are reinforced to hopefully buy us time in a siege
- tried to figure out why our citizens won’t enter the trap hallway as a entrance (should probably be looked into)
- Gay Prince Charles churned out masterpiece pig-tail cloth
- keep an eye on ‘Obscure Night’, this dwarf took down two forgotten beasts on their own!
- we have a ton of food and masterpiece roasts.
- got bolts forged but bolt throwers still need some work
- we are out of flux stone!
- we have a ton of leather
- after the flamingo attack we had two burning corpses in the tavern for a few months
- tavern and engraves guild overlap. I wasn’t sure if this was intentional so I left it.
- created a second tavern cause our first was so crowded. No one seems to really use it…
- down to the lowest cavern there is an artificial waterfall. Might be worth setting a proper meeting hall to get the waterfall happy thought.
- noticed we have thirsty dwarves, probably need more food and drink stockpiles spread throughout the fortress.
Finally thanks @Porkroll for organizing this. It’s been a ton of fun!
I had the engravers guild overlapping to try and get engravers to lecture random citizens and train up competent engravers. In my other forts this works wonders and you end up with dozens of legendary engravers.
File looks good. (on version 53.10 now FYI)
These things are never fun if everything in the fortress runs smoothly and the population remains pegged at the cap. If we wanted that to happen we could just play Animal Crossing instead.
Rolling fire and webs in one year is a hell of an ordeal, but an ending population of 155 is far from doom territory.
I have been waiting over a month for someone to finally explore another cavern layer and you finally did it (no magma unfortunately, but there's a tunnel down to layer three!), so thanks! We are one step closer to the treasures of the deep.
Also, I guess I'll spoil it now that I'm dead. It was ME! I stole the trinket! My character was corrupted. A visitor tried to intimidate him, failed at the intimidation, but apparently he was like "no this place fucking sucks I'll steal shit for you anyway."
Somehow improve mood. The way things are going, I feel like a tantrum spiral is right around the corner.

You might have a point here
Oops forgot to mention, 53.10 updated automatically and I didn’t think about it till half way into the year. This is also when I noticed we are missing 6 ‘nemesis files’….
I was super on edge when the fire beasts came, knowing how quickly that can doom a fortress. But like you wrote, 155 pop is far from the end.

we can't trust anyone
Some legends
In which Doubledee oversees the destruction of a number of priceless artifacts
:

(there are a couple more)
In which Porkroll agrees to steal shit:

In which Booty oversees endless necromancer shenanigans (there's like 20 screen-lengths of this shit lmfao):

Also, confirmation that it was indeed a Kobold who killed the Roc:

I've never looked that closely at legends mode, I wonder what leads a dwarf to destroy artifacts, if it's a personal thing or if I somehow mismanaged the artifacts. Now I need to do more wiki digging.
In which Booty oversees endless necromancer shenanigans (there's like 20 screen-lengths of this shit lmfao):
They seemed like such harmless smol beans, how should I have known to watch them for shenanigans
Also, confirmation that it was indeed a Kobold who killed the Roc:
Am I reading it right that this was a 48 year old kobold who killed nothing before slaying the roc? That's a hell of a story. iirc one or two of her companions died to it, right?
The Roc had a long history with an enemies list four or five screens long, but I guess either there is no simulated combat, or these events were purged from the annals as "insignificant figures" (I enabled this option to reduce filesize)

The Kobold has no history prior to the ambush. I'm guessing these characters get generated for the ambush event.

She was associated with a Kobold civilization through. A rather uneventful one. (This is the full history of Thlukubuslumis)

booty: killed by a giant cave spider
It was inevitable, they're so huggable. I accept my death with dignity and pride.
Seeing the alert ‘booty is fighting’ got my heart pounding and then the others followed immediately after. No time to even think.
Also here’s my Friday afternoon teaser:
Cobbled together from various diaries, engraved walls, and inscriptions found in Beardrenched relating to the year 206:
“Get a drink, burning corpse, eat a meal, burning corpse. 206 the year of fire” A scrap of paper, signed Oreb “Flamingo, flamingo, flamingo.” Scribbled on an artifact made by a child. “So many children have been seen stumbling around, completely oblivious. Brawls are becoming a common occurrence. Our satisfaction survey numbers are tanking. From the official records of Gay King Prince Charles Administrator of Beardrenched. “I would have had that stupid bird if Oreb had let me at them. I would have wrestled it down no problem.” Attributed to Porkrollposadist from the Myth of Stimber.
I swear the Giant Cave Spider incident hadn’t happened when I wrote this.
