The Trevor Project, known for its hotline for LGBTQ+ youth, received $45 million from billionaire and author MacKenzie Scott at the end of 2025, the organization said Monday.

The gift is the largest in the organization's history but also a major boon following years of management turmoil, layoffs and the loss of significant federal funding over the summer.

"I literally could not believe it and it took some time. I actually gasped," said Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, when they were notified of Scott's gift.

Scott, whose fortune largely comes from her ex-husband Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, gave more than $7 billion to nonprofits in 2025, but this gift to The Trevor Project was not included among the donations she disclosed on her website in December. Scott previously gave The Trevor Project $6 million in 2020.

Just pay real fucking taxes. This charity bullshit is a distraction and a tax write-off. Things like the Trevor Project would be funded as a matter of course in perpetuity rather than in fits and starts if the fucking ruling class just PAID THEIR SHARE.

There are many things to say about billionaires, but today, I will celebrate with my queer brothers and sisters

This is what billionaires should do.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Billionaires should pay their fair share of taxes.

[–] jim@lemmy.org 2 points 6 hours ago

And then some!!!!

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

And be taxed for wealth over let's say 100 million.

[–] jim@lemmy.org 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I think at 100 mil the tax should be pretty steep. Anyone with more than that gets into this “untouchable” area. No one should be untouchable.

back in the 60-70's we used to tax everything over 100k (800k now, with inflation) at 70%

now, everything over 600k is just 37%

And the only reason she's a billionaire is because she's... well, maybe mooching isn't the right word, maybe "siphoning off his wealth" lol.

More proof you have to be a complete psycho to become a billionaire the normal way, and they shouldn't exist!

Well, tbf when she married him, he wasn’t rich. This was pre-Amazon. Yes, he got a fair bit of startup cash—but Amazon really is one of those “right thing right time” companies.

It’s what he did in the following couple decades that made him a monster.

She just got half.

She wasn't just along for the ride with Bezos, she helped found Amazon. She wasn't involved directly for the part where it became huge and evil, though

Her fortune didn’t come from her husband. She was an integral business partner in growing their fortune together. She’s just one of the few ghouls who show some semblance of humanity occasionally, so we seem to have to take her agency out of the equation. She’s guilty just like Bezos, but at least there’s some sign of remorse.

She rarely gets credit, why should she take the blame.

[–] skooma_king@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago

Why misattribute her wealth though?
