Youlag is a FreshRSS extension that allows you to browse your YouTube and article feeds through a modernized design that incorporates quality-of-life features.

Optimized for both watching videos and reading articles.

Why?

Stay connected with creators without a Google account by using RSS. Don't be tied to a specific platform and access your subscriptions from any device.

You can also use Youlag solely for its theme and quality of life features, ignoring any video feature.

Highlights v4.1.0

This is the biggest update yet, featuring many customization options! Additionally, the UI has been refreshed, along with numerous tweaks and performance improvements.

  • Whitelist specific categories to use the video mode layout
  • Block incoming YouTube shorts
  • Modernized interface for articles
  • Swipe down in video mode to activate mini player
  • Mini player follows across pages; read articles while keeping a floating video at the bottom

...25+ more updates in the changelog

Other features

  • Use Invidious instance as video playback source
  • Fullscreen video interface for viewing videos
  • Close videos/articles using Esc key or browser Back navigation.
    • Especially handy for smartphones, where you can swipe to trigger Back.

Yeah but can it help me find good RSS feeds?

[–] HerrHelmus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I like the idea of having YouTube in my FreshRSS instance, but I can't get the setting correct. I selected that I only want the layout in my YouTube category, but it's still everywhere. Also, when I open a YouTube item, it looks the same as any other article. I do have a bunch of other layout related extensions enabled, so it might be because of that.

I like it, but I'll need to play with it a bit more and try to get it to work.

That's odd, and you made sure that video mode for "All pages and categories " is unchecked?

If you're not on the latest version of FreshRSS, perhaps try updating? During development and testing, I've always stayed with the latest version.

I am on the latest version, and my settings appear to be correct. I also tried disabling all other plugins, but to no avail. Maybe I'll dive into it this weekend, if I feel like it.

Thanks for responding anyhow.

Thanks for letting me know, I'd love to get this working for as many people as possible, so please let me know if you got any leads.

I recently stood up a Miniflux instance. Any reason in particular to look at FreshRSS?

It depends on your needs, as with most things. I chose FreshRSS as it allowed me to customize it, to turn it into a YouTube subscription feed. Before I created Youlag, I was using FreshRSS' official YouTube plugin for this purpose.

I did stumble upon Miniflux while deciding on a RSS reader, but never considered it as it didn't include thumbnails in the feed view.

Thank you for your insight.

I've been using FreshRSS for years, because of it's flexibility and customization options. I switched to Nextcloud News for a while, since I'm already running Nextcloud anyhow and it's convenient, but it was far too buggy and missed some quality of life features FreshRSS has.

Also, I use Capy Reader on Android and that app is just perfect, with the same flexibility, plus it lets you read articles in the app, without opening the web page.
