1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • Don't come looking for advice, this is not the right community.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

I'll add more distro from the suggestion in the comments.

If you want to do it yourself here the clean map.

The uwuntu-nyarch-Linuwux triad are caves hidden below the mountain

Oh suggested thoses as a joke, thank you!

    I love this! Super fun!

I so want to see how you depict Yggdrassyl, though, the very first and only distro released by Linus himself

Grabbing my machete and wading into the jungles of Fedora.

    [–] Deebster@infosec.pub 17 points 2 days ago

I'd swap Arch and Gentoo - I think Gentoo should be on the precarious peak and Arch at a more accessible altitude.

    [–] crispy_caesus@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd love to see alpine on there

Manjaro is supposedly named after Mount Kilimanjaro and being arch-based, it would be appropriate to have it up on the mountain near Arch but lower.

Perhaps a $path going up the mountain range could be added.

The $path could be called "The Way" so you could put Arch BTW.

I feel like Slackware needs to be higher up the mountain than Debian.

Trisquel and Dragora should be in Fredonia since they run on all free software by default.

somehow needs this meme in it:

Not really Linux, but TempleOS should be in the fog somewhere. Maybe technically off the archipelago, but close enough to be related to it in some way.

    [–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 24 points 3 days ago (1 children)

TempleOS actually enspirits a true hacker/unix philosophy, as bizarre as it is.Β

Garuda should be up near Bazzite

Took me a minute to find openSUSE. It appears, the chameleon did its job

Add Nixos. Also put Slackware to Valley of the lost

    [–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago

slackware smirks in the way that only the subgenius can.
    praise bob.

    LAND of SLOPDOR

you forgot to put OSX on there.

Okay, first I thought this is trash, but the more you explore the better it gets. Here, take a Lemmy award: πŸ…

Gamers Bay of course with Steam and Bazzite. If there's a spot for mobile, Mobian & Postmarket are both top tier

    [–] ekZepp@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (3 children)

Steam OS feels more like a ship anchored in the archipelago. Bazzite is Indeed on land.

Meanwhile openSUSE is still in Germany, just lederhosen & none of this enchanting tropical nonsense.

I assume Hannah Montana is a mystical island only magical maps can lead to?

    [–] melfie@lemy.lol 17 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

I did Ubuntu > Pop > Kubuntu > Mint > more distro hopping > Mint.

It’s nice living on the beach. 😎

    [–] SuperSpruce@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

This reminds me of my "Linux island" city in Cities Skylines! I can get screenshots later, but basically there's the main island of the Linux distros/districts, where the outer parts are more noob friendly and the inner parts are more "advanced", with the nearby, considerably more crowded and poorer Android island consisting of various Android ROMs.

    [–] morto@piefed.social 20 points 3 days ago

Where's the GNU fortress, with trisquel, parabola and others?

Now let's make an rpg in that map, or maybe a new quest for supertuxkart

If unraid is there I want openzfs to be there 😁

    [–] HuntressHimbo@lemmy.zip 17 points 3 days ago

Gentoo belongs over on the Highs of Knowledge

    [–] normonator@lemmy.ml 17 points 3 days ago (7 children)

Lol at arch on the mountain. Every fucking noob goes straight for Arch.

    [–] serpineslair@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Nothing wrong with that, best way to learn the ropes is being chucked into the deep-end imho. Provided of course they are patient and willing to learn.

    [–] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Thing is, even if you’re not patient and willing to learn, getting dumped into the deep end, struggling for 3 hours and then giving up and β€œdowngrading” to something like mint or bazzite is still a whole lot better than trying to unfuck windows 11 into a workable state.

At this point I'm just glad Slackware is even on the map.

Slackware in the Valley of the Lost.
