I didn't really like it when it aired and avoided watching it for many years. Never was a fan if the BSG/Lost show format with constant drama and flashbacks. The episodic style of SG1 and Atlantis, that's my groove.
But I watched it all the way recently and honestly grew on me. Still not a fan of all the filler drama and style of plot, but it has its good moments. And there's some decent acting in there. Definitely worth a watch.
even if you like BSG, it definitely had it's ups and downs. when BSG started, it really sung, and then as it lost steam, it almost became a parody of itself at times. and the thing with Universe for me was that it skipped past the being good part and felt like a bad later season of a once good show
Season 1 of Universe was rough, but they really hit their stride in S2 and I was very disappointed it got cancelled when it did.
I think I actually like S2 of Universe more than a lot of Atlantis. I always felt like they played it a bit safe with SGA, and it just felt like SG1 but in a different location. Which is fine and obviously a lot of people liked that, but the thing I appreciate about Universe is that they tried something different. I think if they'd fully committed to it and cut off the ship's contact with Earth, which would then mean less stupid soap opera drama, the show might have done a lot better.
I’m one of the few people who actually enjoyed this show and wish they would reboot it.
I couldn’t get into it. It was too much drama/not enough happening. Maybe I should give it another chance.
I really disliked all the switching back and forth to earth for useless drama scenes. I know they did this because money at Syfy was pretty tight at the time. But I want to watch a space sci-fi show, not a cheap daytime soap opera.
One of the things I liked about Atlantis was the feeling of being cut off from Earth. Being all on your own with little to no support. This made the stakes higher and all the new stuff a fun new adventure and mystery. This was done for obvious reasons, but I still liked the premise. With the constant communication through the stones, it felt like the team was just around the corner from Earth. Even though they were farther than anyone ever was. But it really didn't feel like that.
Another issue was the potential and all of the stuff they teased. They could do so much and there was so much interesting stuff just peeking around the sides. But the show had so much issues in the production, none of it was ever explored or paid off.
It ended up very lame and a total failure in my eyes. I've only seen the show twice, where I've seen SG1 at least 30 times and SGA a dozen times.
It’s just too much yelling. Atlantis had a similar thing where people were just yelling all the time.
What helped me was going in with zero expectations. I watched as it aired but fell of. It was just not a Stargate.
So when I rewatched years later I told to myself I'm not watching a Stargate show - and with this simple trick, it became quite enjoyable. And in S2 I noticed that Stargate elements actually do peak through.
And come second half if S2 (which I didn't see back then) I realized it became a true Stargate show (though, granted - a bit more serious.and gritty - but with a genuine Stargate soul).
I was devastated that it ended once I reached the end.
