I like you Björk, but no, this would be the worst time for them to declare independence.

I think she's banking on the idea that because they're European, the world wouldn't stand for it.
No one is going to do anything about it. Europe doesn't want the US as the enemy.
That's the sad truth.
Agree. It's what the cheeto would wish for.
Independence of ~56,000 people, sitting on a bunch of resources. That will certainly be honoured by Russia, China and the USA.
Edit: IMHO: becoming independent is objectively dumb. Do they really think they would survive that?
What does she think would happen if Greenland declared independence?.. That the US would just honour that?
The only two options on the table at the moment, as unfair as it is, are staying with Denmark and NATO or being absorbed into the United States. Independence would mean defacto becoming part of the US.
It would be funny if they joined China
Would that necessarily entail that China sends settlers? If not, it would probably be a better deal for them than getting conquered by the USA. And I say this as someone who thinks that the PRC fucking sucks.
That depends on how independence is handled. Denmark/Europe could still ensure defence of an independent Greenland. As much as they can right now at least...
And why would they? No European country would send their troops into a war against the US to defend a former European country that just declared independence.
It's unlikely that any European country will send troops to war against the US either way. But leaving that aside, an independent Greenland would still be associated and integrated with Europe. Everything else would basically be suicide for the country and it's also in Europe's interest to keep Greenland within its sphere.
Which is fucking insane!
Sit down, Bjork.
I do like Björk but I'm not sure how much weight to give her opinions about international politics.
She's no Ja Rule that's for sure
Yes, but I'd take her foreign policy opinions over those of Kid Rock any day of the week!
How did Ja Rule become such a meme...
It was on one standup, do I remember correctly?
Yeah, I know about that Chappelle one.
But is it just that one standup that took over the world and now everybody knows to desire Ja Rules wisdom?
Yeah. Pretty much
Yeah, with genius geopolitical ideas like this, perhaps let's stick to singing for now 😅
I do like Björk but I'm not sure how much weight to give her opinions about international politics.
It doesn't matter who says what, but that what is said is ethical and logically sound. But yeah, obviously the larger the fanbase the more eloquent/nuanced one should be.
Yes, Bjork, that's what Greenlanders voted for in 2025. But they call themselves gradualists because they want to take it slow.
They could declare independence tomorrow and Denmark would respect it - as the Danish government has alluded to.
But the question remains: would that deter US imperialism?
No, it wouldn't. But it has another positive outcome. I don't know if that's what Björk is alluding to, but if Greenland would become independent and the USA would invade there would be no need for Denmark and NATO to do something and consequently NATO would not be on the brink of collapse.
I still think that NATO isn't on the brink of collapse since they could just throw the USA out. We'd still have a nuclear shield by means of France and Britain and while the US is a big contributer the other members of NATO are still there and could muster a defense.
I also think that it isn't a good idea to sacrifice Greenland to us imperialism because it won't stop them. It wouldn't stop Putin it didn't stop Hitler, it will not stop the Trump administration.
That makes me think Bjork wants to prevent the dissolving of NATO - as European officials have said it would spell death of trust within NATO, which is paramount for it's continued relevance.
In a world that has no violence, sure, but right now Greenland's better off under EU nuclear military protection than with its native people being genocided by the warmongers.
It's an overseas territory. There is no EU article 42 protection. They are only under article 5 Nato protection through Denmark. They only recently got their own Nato diplomat for observation.
Nato without US is still more than EU.
I thought she was smarter than this...
Why do the US want Greenland? They can just ask for more bases or buy mining rights or build data centers with the cost of paying some taxes. Why do they want to own it?
Why do they want to own it?
Because they are fascists and the US fascists have been envisioning this expansion since at least 1940:

This lines up pretty much exactly with the all the territorial threats and claims Trump has made:
- Greenland
- Canada
- Mexico
- Cuba
- Panama
- Venezuela
All on there. Not sure if I missed any, he threatened so many over the last year.
But yeah, they essentially envision an American continent dominated by the US in a Monroe doctrine on steroids, which Trump unironically called the "Donroe doctrine" the other day. They are telling you they are fascists to your face in every way short of actually saying the word out loud. It's about resources and territory.
You should post the map. The map was shown when the Canada threats were new but now, Venezuela makes it a hot topic again and there doesn't seem to be a current post.
Are they essentially offering communism?
Technocracy states that price and abundance are incompatible; the greater the abundance the smaller the price. In a real abundance there can be no price at all. Only by abandoning the interfering price control and substituting a scientific method of production and distribution can an abundance be achieved. Technocracy will distribute by means of a certificate of distribution available to every citizen from birth to death. The Technate will encompass the entire American Continent from Panama to the North Pole because the natural resources and the natural boundary of this area make it an independent, self-sustaining geographical unit.
Venezuela makes it believable. But it doesn't add up. Why have ICE deportations if it all becomes one country?
- They don't want to ask
- They don't want to buy
- They don't want to pay taxes
I get the feeling it genuinely is just that it's a part of north america on a risk map.
It gives them a strategic edge should they ever go to war with Russia. It's ridiculous and based on antiquated understandings of the modern world and modern warfare. I mean holy fuck, it's fuck Putin all day, every day, but at least his invasion was about providing him access to shipping.
That can't be. They have bases there and others wrote that they even discontinued bases. It's unlikely that more bases are needed.
Some Silicon Valley oligarchs want to build independent city-states each governed by a corporation in Greenland when the Arctic ice melts due to the greenhouse effect. JD Vance was a protégé of one of them.
