Time to quit Namecheap. Can anyone recommend a good, ethical registrar, preferably Canadian?

It isn't Canadian but it's right here in my home state of Oregon: Porkbun

They're great, easy to use, and thus far despite some extremely questionable registrations of my own expressing a variety of views - no issues.

I also live close enough to their office that I could bang on the door if something were awry...

I have quite a few domains through them as well. Haven't seen anything bad about them and I've been treated as a valued customer so far.

Been using easyDNS for a long time on important domains. Canadian and no BS.

The CIRA website lists a few when you search for an available name.

Is there a smooth and easy way to move domains between registrars? Never done that before

It's a bit annoying to do but not difficult.

Heres the ICANN outline, but you'll have to check with your specific registrars

Glad I moved to porkbun. Starts countdown until inevitable news about them being bad too

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 months ago

I love Porkbun and live an hour from their office. I have had a number of extremely questionable registrations with them dating back to 2016 and have not had any issues thus far.

Fucking hell, why is every service going to shit now. I'm so tired of having to find alternatives

[–] wickedrando@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 months ago

It’s the people

I have three domains I need to move from them. Should have listened to my son when he suggested Porkbun a few years ago.

[–] Tangentism@lemmy.ml 6 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I moved a few domains to them in the middle of last year because my other host had raised their prices ridiculous amounts. Looks like I'll be moving them again!

[–] parzival@lemmy.org 16 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Dammit I've been using them for so long because they are... cheap

[–] Cricket@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I found that Porkbun is even cheaper, at least for .com, which is most of my domains. I've been moving everything over for a while.

[–] parzival@lemmy.org 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I was about to say they probably don't do the whois privacy thing but I was wrong, I'm transfering my domains rn

It makes me sick that I ever gave money to these bastards

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 months ago

To be fair this happened two weeks ago with the new CEO, so the past doesn't really matter.

[–] pineapple@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Dang I was looking into them for an email domain, glad I didnt end up going with it.

[–] mub@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm having trouble parsing the title. Help me, pls.

[–] Aria@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 3 months ago

There's a website called NameCheap where you can buy website names. (For example lemmy.ml)

The website Zionism Observer had done that, and they used their website to document statements made by Israeli officials. Primarily genocidal statements and confessions to crimes.

NameCheap decided to take the website down, which they can do as they are responsible for the paperwork and admin required to have the website function.

Two weeks ago, NameCheap got a new CEO, Hillan Klein, who is linked to Israel.

Thank god I use Websupport.

[–] MashedTech@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

I'm just using Cloudflare and Cyberfolks

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

God dammit. I hate moving domains.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 months ago

On the bright side you get the opportunity to directly financially hurt a company because of their support for Zionism. Bonus points for mentioning this as the reason you are moving.
