Happy New Year!

My winter vacations are almost over and it has been very productive couple of weeks, as far as gaming is concerned at least. Spent the days with family and personal stuff, but was free most of the nights so played for at least a few hours each night.

Finished Assassin's Creed: Rogue Remastered.

Ubisoft games are known for their bloat, but I mostly stuck to the main story and had lots of fun playing the game. Only did side stuff near me, didn't go out of my way to do anything, except maybe a handful of exception.

I liked this about the game, that it dosen't force you to do any of the side stuff. You do need to do some naval battles to upgrade your ship but other than that all side activities are optional. Maybe this has been true for previous games too, but me wanting to clear all the icons on map is what made AC: Black Flag start feeling as a chore and why I ended up dropping it. Not being forced to do everything made me enjoy the game more.

Gameplay and visuals felt pretty good. Game didn't feel dated, but since I mostly play 5-6 years old games I am not sure I am a good judge of that.

I am done with the naval part in these games though. Hope the next games in the series have significantly less of them.

Played and finished Beyond: Two Souls. Got this a long time ago as PS+ monthly game, finally got around to playing it.

Comparing it to the previous game by Quantic Dreams, Heavy Rain, the gameplay and the narrative was much better. And for a game that was originally released in 2013 (with the PS4 version releasing in 2015) the game holds up very well. The controls are very simple, you move around from left stick, interact with the world using right stick (intearctable objects have white circle above them, you just move the right stick in that direction) and all other actions are done by pressing or holding the button they are showing on screen.

Each level ends with showing the choices you made and what percentage of the people in the world who made the same choices. Game also has multiple endings but I just played it once, will probably see the other endings on YouTube.

For those who like adventure / narrative games, and haven't played Beyond: Two Souls, I'll highly recommend the game to them.

Played (and dropped) Returnal.

Gameplay wise this is probably the best game I have played lately. The movement, the controls they are all super smooth. Narrative is also pretty interesting, but I didn't reach far enough to see how it unfolds.

Took me a few tries but I reached the first boss, then died, and since it's a roguelike (or is it roguelite?) started from the beginning again. And that is the only issue I have with the game, the roguelike nature of it. Every time you die you have to start from the beginning, and you have to explore the whole map before fighting the boss, so that you can get some powerups and better weapons, you can't just directly run to the boss. After dying to the boss 2-3 times, I just gave up and dropped the game.

Finished Mutant Mudds Deluxe . I was already about 80% of the way through, so went back and finished the last few levels, which were the toughest ones yet.

As for the secret levels, or the other game in the collection Mutant Mudds Super Challenge, they were too difficult for me. Played them a bit and decided they aren't for me. Great games if you like difficult platformers.

Looking for some some short game, I started (and finished) Blue Rider. It's a top-down shmup where you can move in all directions, and no auto-moving screen. Which actually makes the game much easier, since you can get back to safety when there are too many bullets flying around. Not possible in boss fights, but there is still enough area to keep moving. I think the game is closer to twin stick shooters than usual shmups.

Game has 9 levels, and if you die you can start from any of the levels that you have reached. The most trouble I had with the level was the second last one, when you pass through any place it gets covered with lava, so you can't escape backwards and have to keep moving. Other than that the game wasn't too difficult.

What about all of you? What have you been playing and/or plan to play?

Didn't game too much this holiday season and I want to focus more on making games instead of playing them this year - let's see how that one is working out.

Anyhow, got in a good chunk of SMT V Vengeance! The QoL stuff is awesome, but it's still pretty similar to the original - just with more quests and demons along the way . I don't mind since I loved the original game, but if you didn't it likely not worth it.

Started Ai: The Somnium Files! Decided to play through some detective games with my partner. This one is a great start! I like the characters, it's both fun and has a good mystery. I'll probably go through the entire series + rain code, then do the Ace Attorney games. Are there other games like this?

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Good luck with making your game, is there anywhere we can follow your progress?

I want to learn game development, and fiddled around a bit with Godot, but I have 0 creativity so maybe if someday meet some like minded creative person 😀

[–] De_Narm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thanks for asking, but there isn't yet. I've dabbled around quite a bit and wan't to focus on actually finishing something this year. Maybe for the next one.

Over the last two years, I've often lost my drive to continue since there are always new shiny ideas that are far more interesting than doing a lot of the menial work game dev involves. Kinda the opposite of your problem, really.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Hehe, good luck!

I have been planning to reduce gaming a bit too, and do something productive. Have tons of hobby projects lying around that I never finished, should do something about those. Let's see how it goes.

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Are there other games like this?

The first thing to come to mind is the Zero Escape series, which are older (and much darker) games from the same author as AI. They mix VN-like sections with "Escape the Room" puzzles.

  • Oblivion Remastered
  • Coral Island
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2

I like a bit of variety.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

How is Coral Island? It's on my wishlist, but haven't seen any reviews.

[–] MSKX@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Great if you like playing cosy/chill/life sim type games. Won't be of interest if you don't.

Basically they've borrowed all the best aspects of things like Stardew Valley and the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games.

But with better graphics and better quality of life and gameplay.

By far the best game of its type IMO. Very relaxing and very addictive. Still has a few bugs, but nothing too serious.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I love games like these, but sometimes games try to go for better graphics but lose the actual depth of the game, so was wondering how Coral Island does it.

Hopefully the bugs would be fixed by the time I get around to playing it.

Funnily enough, still TotK. I played heavily when the game was new and completed 2/3 of the main story missions. Then I kind of fell out of it at the 150 hour mark or so while searching for the Master Sword. I didn't want to look it up, so I slogged a bit while retracing steps. That slog turned into 2024 and newer games came out. Then the Switch 2 was announced with enhanced performance, with a specific mention for TotK, so I held off on playing it. Of course, I was distracted by Mario Kart, and THEN Bananza, but I'm finally back to TotK and it's as wonderful as it ever has been. I completed everything I was stuck on before, and then some. Now I'm trying to power my armor up before proceeding further towards the final battle.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you! I keep getting distracted by everything, as usual. Also your reply is the first I've ever gotten on this account, so that's cool. Nice username too haha, great game.

Glad to have the honour of being first! 😀

There are every kind of people here, but in general the community on lemmy is pretty good (at least in the circles I move in), so hope you enjoy it here too!

I beat Zelda: Oracle of Seasons over the Christmas break and am now about halfway through Zelda: Oracle of Ages.

Most of the puzzles are fun, but boy howdy am I glad that we have walkthroughs.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Hehe, yeah, those old games can be tough without guides. Good luck with Oracle of Ages!

[–] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Alright, here we go, let's start the year off with the big one. I've beaten Metroid Prime 4 with 100% items and 99% Scans (because one boss has a scannable projectile, which is just great) and I have to say that it is my least favorite Metroid game (barring the NES and GB titles on account of their age). I'll say this first: The visuals and atmosphere are brilliant. The boss fights are very good. Now onto everything else:

spoiler

When I started playing I asked when the game opens up and unfortunately, the correct answer is never. I've never seen areas in a Metroid game feel more like 'levels' than here. But oh, if it was only that! Nothing crushed my soul more than finding an area map and finding a linear string of rooms that you would expect to find in Final Fantasy 13. If there's ever an offshoot, it's usually one room. TWO if you're lucky! And when you're done, you're done. If you're ever forced to come back for a new ability, it's in a room near the beginning. You never unlock a whole new sub-area.

I didn't even bother backtracking for items until I had all of my abilities because I'd just have to go through the linearity again. There's no "Oh, I'll take a little detour on my way to Area X to pick up items along the way!" because none of the areas are connected in any way! Prime 3 was similar, but it still had good level design and essentially replaced the classic elevators with fast travel. What did Prime 4 replace it with? SLOW TRAVEL! Cue the rant about the motorcycle and the desert...

What on earth were they thinking? I truly wonder if they created the desert first and added the motocycle to make it less painful, or if they added the desert as an excuse for the motorcycle. It's so bland that if it didn't exist at all, it wouldn't feel like anything is missing. I don't even know what else to say, there's nothing interesting to talk about. I can't even rant about the green crystals as a collectable resource, it's plain stupid.

The whole 'Psychic' aspect of your abilities felt a bit forced to me. The Psycho Beam is fun and the ability to throw your Morph Bombs is neat, albeit not used very creatively, but they didn't have to make EVERYTHING psychic. The Psychic Boots give you a double jump... and you can stand on purple Psycho platforms! ...what? And the Psycho Power Bombs which are just Power Bombs that do nothing Psycho-related as far as I can tell.

The story is kinda weird, too. You start out in the prologue, Sylux is there and Metroid are fusing to things and suddenly it's all about Green Energy, Green Energy, Green Energy. All the bosses still have Metroids fused to them but apparently, nobody cares at all! Nor does anyone acknowledge Sylux as a character until the very end of the game.

Now, for the other characters in the game: I kinda like them. They get annoying when they're with you and comment on everything you do (the first guy in particular) but I have no problem with them existing in the game. What I hate is Samus' general apathy towards them. No matter what happens, she just stares at them. I know developers are deathly afraid of making her talk at this point, but a word of affirmation every now and then would work wonders. I didn't believe for a second that Samus cares at all about any of them false-sacrificing themselves in the Mines. Or for real at the end. If that even is the real ending, I feel like I got the bad ending for pushing the button, but I genuinely don't care.

At the end of the day remains the question: So it's a bad Metroid, but is it a bad game? I have no idea. Without the Metroid, it's not a game I would be interested in playing in the first place, so I have no scope of reference.

I'll be back in Xenoblade X for now. I've played it for the first time in 2 weeks and got my level 60 Skells made. Next stop, proper weapons!

i haven't updated on this one regularly, but I've been playing more Wild Arms 2 on and off this whole time. It does some good things gameplay-wise, but I'm not really feeling the story anymore. The localisation doesn't help, there are quite a few very awkwardly phrased lines.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Congratulations on finishing Metroid Prime 4! I haven't played the game yet so not going to read the spoiler but sad to see it getting rated as bad Metroid.

Are you going to continue Wild Arms 2?

[–] sdcSpade@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm recording my playthrough if Wild Arms 2, so it would have to have absolutely no redeeming qualities for me to drop it. And I want to play the whole Wild Arms franchise eventually and I've never played past the second game in the past, so I want to get the full picture.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ah, interesting. Where can we watch your playthrough?

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

spoilerI think most of the issues with the game are probably consequence of its long and convoluted development.

What on earth were they thinking? I truly wonder if they created the desert first and added the motocycle to make it less painful, or if they added the desert as an excuse for the motorcycle. It’s so bland that if it didn’t exist at all, it wouldn’t feel like anything is missing.

Driving the bike was fun, they did a good job with the controllers. But they didn't use it in any interesting way! Even the enemies in the desert are not interesting at all. I wouldn't mind if they kept the bike for future games, but using it in a more creative, fun way. The desert seems to be a clash between making it more "Breath of the Wild-y" and a Metroid game. They sort of acknowledged it was messy.

Now, for the other characters in the game: I kinda like them. They get annoying when they’re with you and comment on everything you do (the first guy in particular) but I have no problem with them existing in the game. What I hate is Samus’ general apathy towards them. No matter what happens, she just stares at them. I know developers are deathly afraid of making her talk at this point, but a word of affirmation every now and then would work wonders. I didn’t believe for a second that Samus cares at all about any of them false-sacrificing themselves in the Mines. Or for real at the end. If that even is the real ending, I feel like I got the bad ending for pushing the button, but I genuinely don’t care.

I thought the same with the characters. They're just badly written, particularly the first guy "Jar Jar Binks". But like you, I don't think it's bad that they're in the game. And yeah, when Samus doesn't even acknowledge or gesture back when people talk to her, it just feels awkward. They really got burnt with Other M I guess 😅

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Struggling through Nicktoons Unite for the Gamecube. Not because it's hard, but because it's sluggish, bland and repetitive to a fault. I much prefer the sequel, Battle for Volcano Island.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why not just skip the game? Life is too short to spend on bad games :-)

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'm usually very patient about games, the times I have dropped any for not liking being countable in one hand. Thus I still push on. But it's a tempting proposal and I'm seriously considering adding it to the pile. "<.<

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, hope the game gets better! Good luck!

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dumped the disc and the save. In an emulator, I set speed at 200% wherever precision wasn't needed, put an Infinite Lives cheat and used Timmy as his maxed out basic attack is AoE. The game then got between neutral and barely enojoyable, so profit?

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Barely enjoyable is tons better than how you were feeling before. So congratulations!

[–] pasdechance@jlai.lu 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'm about to finish Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It was a gift I wasn't expecting and I really enjoyed it. I will play it again but it makes me want to play the first Prime again, so that's my plan once I'm done with Beyond.

I'll probably buy a few of the games that are on sale too: Zoe Begone could be good, or the Toaplan Collections. I have a stack of unfinished games, which is always good to have.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I start to get an itch if I have too many unfinished games. Though if I officially drop the game, I count it as finished, it's only the games I plan to continue that give me a slight anxiety.

Good luck with Metroid and your other games!

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Finished Crypt Custodian!

Another fun and wholesome metroidvania from Kyle Thompson, I loved how the goal you need to complete to unlock the final part of the game is simply "make ten friends".

I liked Islets a bit more but both games are excellent.

First successful escape in Hades!

I haven't mentioned it in these threads but I've been doing quick sessions of this game for a while, usually 1-2 escape attempts per sitting.

Last week I got my first success on attempt #40, and to my surprise it was using the Adamant Rail which is the weapon I like the least.

Playing Hades 2!

This game is amazing. It builds up on its predecessor while adding a lot of new mechanics, content and polish. Animations have improved even further, performance is excellent and I think it even also loads faster than the first game. Progress and unlocking feels much faster and natural as well.

A real contender for GOTY 2025. Right now I'd still pick Ender Magnolia, but if I had gotten it earlier with more time to explore it my opinion might have been different.

I won't be commenting about this during weekly discussions, but I'll drop a note if I get to any interesting milestones.

Playing Super Robot Taisen Y!

Finally done with the DLC1 content. Overall I was quite impressed with the way they developers integrated the new series, it felt very natural and I really enjoyed the new storyline. I wasn't very hyped with DLC2 due to the selection of series, but seeing what they did with DLC1 definitely raised my expectations.

As for negatives, there's two big ones: I'd really like to see more attacks for the DLC units (like Season 2 attacks for Big O and the upgraded forms for the Kamen Riders), and the lack of enemy diversity - I enjoyed having a new set of antagonists for the DLC, but they reused the new enemy units way too much.

I'm now doing a push to complete the game, according to the wiki there's only 7 stages left. Last one I did was the Godzilla battle, and the development team treated with it all due respect - it's a terrifying boss with brutal attacks, three actions per turn and a huge MAP attack. I also loved how it was integrated in the lore of other series, in particular the connection they did with Getter Robo Arc.

No progress on Witch on the Holy Night because I'm focused on SRWY, but I'll get my attention once I'm done with it. I'm between jobs right now and have a "free" week so I hope I can finally get both of these games done.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I'll try to play one of Kyle Thompson's game this year. Maybe Islets or Sheepo. Hopefully I'll enjoy them too.

Did you drop Hades after completing one escape? I think you need to escape about 8 times to get the credits, and then about 20 or so for the true ending. I only escaped twice and then watched the endings on YouTube.

Hades is probably the only roguelike that I have liked yet, so will try Hades 2, eventually. Good to see that it improves upon the first one.

Super Robot Taisen Y reminds me that I have to start on my mecha animes. You recommended a few last time so will have to see which are easily accessible.

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

No, I still plan to keep rotating between it and the sequel.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Isn't that a bit jarring? Or are the games different enough that it doesn't feel like that?

[–] Phelpssan@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Kinda? I feel a "downgrade" when going back to Hades 1, but the game is still good and fun to play. But it definitely takes some time adjusting.

[–] MisterDeutsch@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I’ve had a grand gaming time! In the board gaming arena, I bought and played the new edition of Quacks, a bag building push your luck game. I’ve only played my copy of it once and I was so pleased that my youngest beat me in a wire-to-wire victory. Then I got to explain to him what a wire-to-wire victory was.

I played some Heroes of Might and Magic 3 with the shorn of the Abyss expansion. The just released a new faction for this twenty-five year old game! I don’t get much playtime there, though, because the youngest hogs the computer to play Bloons TD6.

I bought Ace Attorney Investigations, continuing the trend of buying games I happily bought and beat in previous console generations. Vacation is about to end, but I’m flying through the first of the two games included in the collection. I think I’m about halfway through.

In Octopath Traveler Champions of the Continent, I’d been eagerly playing a limited time board game mini-game where instead of picking your party and playing, you get random rare temporary recruits. It’s been a blast playing with the third of the game’s characters I never got to experience! I also played a little bit of Octopath II during winter break.

I’m so glad the weekend posts are back! I missed them over the course of late December. I hope y’all have a better 2026 than last year (whether yours was bad or good).

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Oooh, wire-to-wire victory, that's great. I bought and played a few board games in last couple of weeks too, was going to mention in the post but it had already become too long.

Bought Eat-Carrot, Whirl Othello, Abalone and Clue Giant Edition. Eat Carrot looks like a game for very little kids but my daughter was interested so got it, but it's pretty fun, one of the most family fun we had was with this. Each player has 4 rabbits, and the goal is to start from one side and reach the top of the carrot. Every turn you pick up a card and move 1, 2, or 3 places or spin the carrot, depending on what the card shows. When you spin the carrot, the place where you are standing can become a hole and you can fall down, losing your rabbit, or it can throw you down from the board making you start from beginning, or raise the drawbridge to block your way.

Whirl Othello is made up of 4 3x3 squares, each turn you put your piece on the board and rotate any of the board by 90 degree. The goal is to have 5 in a row. 2 players only. In Abalone you can move your 1, 2, or 3 pieces in any of the 6 directions. The goal is to push other person's piece from the board. The first one to push out 6 pieces wins. The toughest of all games, and most complicated (but still not that complicated) but very enjoyable.

Clue Giant Edition we got cause we never owned a copy of Clue and our kids have never played it, so wanted to rectify that, but this turned out to be some weird spin-off of Clue. It was kinda boring.

I bought Ace Attorney Investigations, continuing the trend of buying games I happily bought and beat in previous console generations.

Hopefully with backward compatibility becoming common we won't have to keep buying older games anymore!

What are your plans for starting Octopath Traveler 0?

I’m so glad the weekend posts are back! I missed them over the course of late December. I hope y’all have a better 2026 than last year (whether yours was bad or good).

Thanks, it's nice to know people look forward to and miss these. And thanks! hope you also have a better 2026!

[–] MisterDeutsch@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Re: Octopath Traveler 0

I don’t know yet. I’m on the final final battle of the mobile game and I definitely want to finish that before I start Zero. But I’m still stuck between my desire for a physical copy and my dislike of key-cards. I’m leaning toward picking it up digitally, but since I’ve waited a month at this point, I’ll probably wait for a sale.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah, putting the game on GKC wasn't a good idea. Good luck with the final boss!

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Happy New Year!

I finished the main story in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, I played a bit more after that to get some extra items and crystals (I copied the save file right before the point of no return, what a weird decision to do this with the completed save file). It's a good game, but given the time it was in development and how long since the last one, it could never live up to the expectations. It's still great and looks stunning, hopefully it'll be the beginning of a new trilogy. It made me want to play Dread and finish Prime 2 on my Game Cube.

Speaking of GameCube, I recently got a rather good price on a copy of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. I had Road Rage, which I really enjoyed, so my Simpsons GameCube collection is now complete. It's a very fun game, lots of dialogue from the original cast. I have a backlog for GameCube now on top of the Switch/Switch 2 backlog 😬

I have been playing and really enjoying Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection on Switch 2. I already went through all the documentary stuff, which I loved! And I've been playing the games. I think my favourite is still MK II because it's the one I played the most back then on my SNES. But I'm starting to like UMK III more the more I play it. These games are so fun, can't wait to play with more people and laugh trying to pull off Fatalities and such.

I got Absolum for the Switch. I've only played a little bit so far, but it's really good. Also a game I'll really enjoy playing co-op soon.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Do you think Metroid Prime 4 is a good Metroid game? I am still hoping for Prime 2 and 3 coming to Switch, but it's looking doubtful now.

Congratulations on completing your collection! Having a backlog isn't a bad thing, means you have lot more stuff to enjoy 😀

I was thinking about giving Absolum a try (eventually), but after my experience with Returnal, I am not sure if I should spend money and time on any other roguelike game.

[–] picandocodigo@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Do you think Metroid Prime 4 is a good Metroid game?

Absolutely! It has its issues, but it's still a good game.

I am still hoping for Prime 2 and 3 coming to Switch, but it’s looking doubtful now.

Me too! Now that they're done with MP4, maybe they'll get on to that. I assume it'd take less time than a Metroid Prime 5! But it's not looking good...

As I said, I didn't play a lot of Absolum. But the graphics are amazing, like SoR 4, and it feels like a beat 'em up with rogue(like|lite) elements. It doesn't lean on it as much as Double Dragon Gaiden I think, but I need to play a bit more to have a proper opinion.

[–] slimerancher@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Absolutely! It has its issues, but it’s still a good game.

That's good to know. This seems to have pretty mixed reviews, but should be enjoyable for someone like me, who doesn't have a long history with Metroid franchise.

Well, some people love roguelike games, and it has gotten very good reviews. But I personally have enough of that. Will probably try Hades 2, but don't plan to try any other roguelike game for now.
