That doesn't even really tell the true story. The fact is that the original version was an unremarkable piece that wasn't important or monetarily valuable, and it was in bad shape and rapidly deteriorating. If she did nothing then the piece would've been destroyed soon anyway.
Additionally, her restoration process was still unfinished when it got famous, and while it probably never would've looked great, it also might've looked better if she was able to complete the process
