Mandatory note that there actually are significant differences between some Roman gods, which bear older Etruscan and Italic influences, and their Greek equivalents, and a very different outlook in Roman theology.
On the other hand, in support of the meme, many gods, like Apollo, were just stolen outright because they had no Roman equivalent - the Romans didn't even bother to change the name on Apollo!
