Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

i gather that Y.V., seen speaking in this video, is not a favourite figure in this sub.

to expabd beyond echo chambers and raise cognitive flexibility it is important to engage critically with every side, especially since we're all european in this sub and are entering world-wide war. so i wanna read some critique on Yanis Varoufakir from here, if you who read this would find it in your interest to share reflections from hearing this video

I don't waste my time anymore to listen to this pseudo-intellectual. There is much to criticize about this person, but the most obvious comes from withing his own organization. In 2022, soon after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Polish left-wing party Razem had left Varoufakis' so-called Progressive International and 'Democracy in Europe 2025 Movement' (DIEM25), the reason being very revealing:

In the absence of an unequivocal declaration recognising Ukraine's sovereignty and an absolute condemnation of Russian imperialism by the Progressive International and the Democracy in Europe 2025 Movement, Lewica Razem ends its cooperation with these organizations.

This person has nothing to do with democracy or anything like that. His organizations are just cultivating a personality cult around Yanis and some others that appeal to specific anti-democratic groups of which some are also here on Lemmy.

Another empty rant by an anti-European propagandist who has been parroting always the same narratives. It can be safely ignored.

I used to respect his opinion...now he's just another blathering head who is always "right about everything" in hindsight.

Looks like a radical extremist astroturf. They claim the EU is undemocratic and deeply flawed and must be overthrown.

EDIT: A closer look revealed they haven't really done anything shifty and that they promote a lot of good stuff, including opposing Brexit. Not sure why they've had no success in any elections.

What's wrong with YV, in general? I'm not extremely familiar but he seems intelligent

[โ€“] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 12 hours ago

He has some good takes, but also keeps quite bad company in an misguided attempt at left-unity. This video, clearly directed at what is left of DIEM25 supporters is one of those.

Iโ€™ve seen portions of these videos. My conclusion was that it was an AI reading a script. It was badly edited with intonation, pauses and sentence breaks all over the place. So who knows whoโ€™s content or agenda it is. Doubtful it is Y. V.

The same video is linked on the official DIEM25 website. I agree that the editing makes it look and sound a bit odd, but this still seems to be a legit video and not some AI slop.

From what little I've seen, DiEM25 aren't a very legitimate movement to start with, it being on their website means nothing for its credibility.

[โ€“] poVoq@slrpnk.net 0 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Varoufakis is a founding member of DIEM25 ๐Ÿคท

It is a video posted on the official DIEM25 YT channel, shared on the official DIEM25 website, depicting a well known founding member of DIEM25 addressing DIEM25 supporters. This video is not AI slop by some random person ๐Ÿคท

I feel like you failed to parse my first reply in this thread. Go back and try again.

[โ€“] poVoq@slrpnk.net 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

And you fail basic reading comprehension on what my original reply was about. Go troll someone else.

[โ€“] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -1 points 12 hours ago

I responded directly to and argued your original reply. You said:

It's their official source so it must be legit.

I said:

Their official source doesn't even make it legit.
